How to see and cancel all your Amazon subscriptions

By · Published on · Updated on · 8 min read

In short

Your Amazon subscriptions are listed in the memberships and subscriptions section of your account. Prime, Kindle Unlimited and Music Unlimited appear there, with their fee and renewal date. Prime Video channels are managed in your Prime Video account and Audible on its own website. Each one is cancelled separately: cancelling Prime does not cancel the others.

Each Amazon subscription is cancelled separately. Key fact from the guide “see and cancel Amazon subscriptions”.

Why it is worth checking once a month

Subscriptions are taken out in a minute and forgotten in two. Each one charges a small amount, on different days, which is why they go unnoticed on the statement. Added together, Prime, Kindle Unlimited, Audible and Music Unlimited come to €37.96 a month.

Reviewing them is not distrusting Amazon. It is knowing what you pay. Ten minutes a month is enough.

The main place: memberships and subscriptions

  1. Sign in to Amazon.es with your account.
  2. Open “Account & Lists” and go into your account.
  3. Find the memberships and subscriptions section.
  4. You will see a list with each subscription, its status and its next charge date.
  5. Click the one you want to see its options, including cancelling.

The exact name of the section may vary with website redesigns, but it is always inside your account. If you cannot find it, type “subscriptions” into the search box of Amazon's help pages.

Amazon Prime

Prime has its own page inside the account. There you see whether your plan is monthly or annual, how much you pay and when it renews. The option to cancel is under managing your membership. The full process, including the refund, is in how to cancel Amazon Prime.

Kindle Unlimited

It appears in the list of memberships and subscriptions. When you cancel, you keep reading until the end of the period already paid for; after that, borrowed books stop being available. The ones you bought remain yours.

Amazon Music Unlimited

It is managed from your Amazon account or from Amazon Music settings. If you signed up from the mobile app and pay through the app store, you will have to cancel it there.

Cancelling Music Unlimited does not leave you without music if you have Prime: you keep the included music. The difference is explained in Music Prime or Music Unlimited.

Audible

Audible uses your same Amazon account, but it is managed from its own website: the option to cancel the membership is in the account details. Before you confirm, the screen tells you what happens to your access.

Prime Video channels

Prime Video channels are the easiest to forget, because they are added with one click when you want to watch a series. They are managed in Prime Video's account and settings, under the channels tab, where each one is listed with its renewal date.

Each channel is cancelled separately. The good habit is to unsubscribe on the very day you finish what you wanted to watch.

Product subscriptions: Subscribe & Save

These are not services but regular deliveries of consumables at a discount. They have their own section in the account. There you can skip a delivery, change the frequency or cancel. Review them too: a delivery you no longer need is an expense just like a fee.

If you pay through the app store

Some subscriptions can be taken out from a phone and billed through your phone's app store. In that case they do not appear on Amazon as cancellable: they are managed in the subscriptions section of the store.

The ten-minute monthly review

  1. Open your bank statement and look for charges from Amazon, Audible and Prime Video.
  2. Compare them with the list of memberships and subscriptions.
  3. For each one, ask yourself whether you used it in the last month.
  4. Cancel what you have not used.
  5. Note the next renewal date of the ones you keep.

If a charge does not match any subscription, look at your order history and your Prime Video channels. It is usually one of the two.

What happens when you cancel each one

SubscriptionWhen you cancel
Amazon PrimeAmazon says whether there is a refund or until what day you keep the benefits
Kindle UnlimitedYou read until the end of the paid period
Amazon Music UnlimitedYou go back to the music included with Prime, if you have it
AudibleThe cancellation screen says what happens to your access
Prime Video channelYou watch it until the end of the paid period

In every case, read the confirmation screen before accepting and keep the email you receive.

How much you save with each cancellation

  • Kindle Unlimited: €119.88 a year.
  • Audible: €119.88 a year.
  • Amazon Music Unlimited: €155.88 a year.
  • Ad-free Prime Video: €23.88 a year.

These are our own calculations: the monthly fee times twelve. To decide which to drop, the useful sum is what each use costs you.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking that cancelling Prime cancels everything.
  • Deleting an app and assuming that ends the service.
  • Looking for Audible in the Amazon account and not on its website.
  • Forgetting Prime Video channels.
  • Not keeping the confirmation email.

How to recognise each charge on your statement

Amazon charges do not always say what they are for. The description your bank shows may be generic, which is how a small charge passes for an order.

  • Look at the amount: €4.99, €9.99 or €12.99 are fees, not purchases.
  • Look at the date: fees repeat on the same day each month.
  • Search for that amount in your order history. If it is not there, it is a subscription.
  • Charges from Audible and from Prime Video channels carry their own description.

The date trick is the quickest. Two charges of the same amount a month apart are a subscription.

Free trials are on the list too

A trial in progress appears under memberships and subscriptions as active, with the date it will become paid. It is the best place to check how many trials you have open and when each one ends.

If you want all the dates at a glance, the free trial calculator gives them to you from the start date.

Copy this table into a note and fill it in once. From then on, the monthly review means looking at the last column.

In a household with several accounts

It is common for two people in the same home to pay for the same thing separately. Put your lists side by side. If you both have individual Music Unlimited, the family plan costs less than two individual ones: €22.99 against €25.98.

Three questions before cancelling

  1. Have I used it in the last 30 days?
  2. Is there something I want to finish before I leave?
  3. Is it better to cancel it or to use it only a few months a year?

If a series or a book is half finished, cancel anyway and make the most of it until the end of the paid period, where the service allows. That way it does not depend on your memory.

Reactivating a subscription

Cancelling closes no doors. All of them are reactivated from the same place where they were cancelled, and your playlists, your library and your history are usually still there. The only thing that does not come back is the free trial, which is for new customers.

If a charge is not yours

  1. Check that nobody at home is using your account.
  2. Review your Prime Video channels and product subscriptions.
  3. Change your password if you see activity you do not recognise.
  4. Contact customer service from your account.

The reminders worth having

  • A monthly calendar reminder for the review.
  • A reminder seven days before each annual plan renews.
  • Your bank's charge notifications, switched on.

The annual Prime plan is the one most often forgotten, because it is charged once a year. A reminder a week before lets you decide calmly whether to renew, switch to monthly or leave.

Once a year, the big review

As well as the monthly check, spend half an hour a year looking at everything together. Add up what you have paid for each subscription over twelve months and set it beside how much you used it. Annual figures say things that monthly ones hide: €119.88 for a subscription you opened ten times looks different.

In short

  1. Everything starts in your account: memberships and subscriptions.
  2. Audible and Prime Video channels have their own place.
  3. Each subscription is cancelled separately.
  4. Go through them once a month with your bank statement in front of you.
  5. Always keep the cancellation email.

If what you want is to try services without a charge slipping through, the method is in how to chain the free trials.
