Baby registry for twins: what to double and what not to

By · Published on · Updated on · 8 min read

In short

With twins you do not need to ask for two of everything. You double what each baby uses at the same time: car seats, somewhere to sleep each, clothes and bottles. One is enough of what is used in turns: bath, changing table, steriliser or baby monitor. And what is shared changes model, such as the pushchair, which becomes a double. Prepare the registry a month earlier than usual.

The rule for deciding: at the same time or in turns

A single question settles almost the whole registry: will the two of them use it at the same time? If the answer is yes, ask for two. If it is used in turns, one is enough.

Both travel in the car at once: two seats. They are bathed one after the other: one bath. With that rule you avoid the most common mistake, which is to multiply the whole list by two and fill the house.

What to ask for twice

  • Car seats: one per baby, approved and suited to their weight.
  • Somewhere to sleep each, following your paediatrician's advice.
  • Clothes in the first sizes: more of them, not exactly double.
  • Bottles and dummies, if you are going to use them.
  • High chairs, later on: they can wait several months.

With clothes, exactly double is too much. Two babies do not make twice the laundry if you run a wash every day. Ask for one and a half times what you would ask for one.

What one is enough for

  • Bath.
  • Changing table and its mat.
  • Steriliser and bottle warmer.
  • Baby monitor, if they sleep in the same room.
  • Thermometer, scissors and brush.
  • Baby carrier, to begin with.

If the house has two floors, a second simple changing station downstairs saves many trips. That is not doubling because there are two of them: it is doubling because of the stairs.

What changes model

Some things are neither doubled nor kept: they are replaced by another version. The main one is the pushchair. A double takes up more room and costs more than a single, so it is worth looking at calmly.

  • Measure the width of your front door, the lift and the car boot before choosing.
  • Check the folded weight: you will lift it every day.
  • Make sure it takes the car seats you have chosen, if you want to combine them.

It is the ideal gift for several people to share. On the registry, mark it as a group gift.

When to prepare the registry

Multiple pregnancies usually end earlier than single ones. That is why it makes sense to bring forward by a month the timeline we use in the baby registry guide.

StepOne babyTwins
Create the registryAround week 20Around week 16
Share itAround week 28Around week 24
Essentials at homeWeek 36Week 32

It is a guideline timeline of our own. Your medical team will tell you the dates they are working with in your case, and those are the ones that count.

The essentials before the birth

  1. Two car seats fitted and tested.
  2. Where each one is going to sleep.
  3. Nappies and what you need for changing.
  4. Clothes for the first weeks, washed.
  5. The pushchair, assembled and tried at the front door.

Everything else can arrive later. The detail, for one baby, is in what you need before the birth; here only the quantity changes.

Consumables: where you really notice there are two

Nappies, wipes and creams are used up at twice the rate. It is the best place to point anyone who asks what to give, because there is never too much.

  • Ask for nappies in two sizes: the first is outgrown quickly.
  • Add large packs, which work out better per unit.
  • Leave consumables on the registry after the birth too.

To compare pack sizes, look at the price per unit on the product page. We explain it in how to read a product page.

How to spread the gifts by price

A twins registry has more expensive gifts than usual: two seats and a double pushchair. So that nobody is left without options, balance it with plenty of affordable gifts.

BandWhat to putShare of the registry
Up to €30Consumables, bibs, muslins, bodysuitsHalf
€30 to €100Bedding, carrier, baby monitorA third
Over €100Seats, double pushchair, high chairsThe rest, as group gifts

How to tell the family

With two babies, people tend to give in pairs: two matching outfits, two soft toys. It is sweet and not very practical. The registry lets you steer it without saying no to anyone.

Share it with a simple line: “We have noted what we need, in case it gives you an idea.” How to do it is in how to share your baby registry.

What can be handed down or borrowed

  • Clothes in the first sizes, which are barely worn.
  • Bath and changing table.
  • Bouncers and play mats.
  • Books and toys.

Car seats are the exception: use them second-hand only if you know their history and they have not been in a collision. We discuss it in what to reuse with a second baby.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the whole list by two.
  • Choosing the pushchair without measuring the front door or the boot.
  • Asking for all the clothes in the smallest size.
  • Leaving the registry until week 30.
  • Not including cheap gifts.

Clothes: how many and in what size

ItemFor one babyFor two
Bodysuits6 to 810 to 12
Sleepsuits4 to 67 to 9
Hats and socks2 or 3 sets4 or 5 sets
Muslins4 to 68 to 10

These are guideline quantities of our own, assuming a wash every day. Spread them across two sizes: the smallest is outgrown in a few weeks, and twins do not always wear the same one.

They do not need to be dressed alike. Two different colours per item help you tell whose is whose.

Space at home

Two babies take up more room because of what is doubled than because of themselves. Before adding anything big to the registry, measure.

  • The space where they will sleep, with room to walk between the two.
  • The hallway or the place where the pushchair will be kept.
  • The car boot, with the pushchair folded.
  • The lift door and the front door.

Note the measurements on your phone. You will need them when looking at product pages, where the dimensions are listed.

For going out

The changing bag gets twice as full. Ask for one large one or two medium ones, and a folding changing mat. A baby carrier lets you carry one while the other goes in the pushchair, which is exactly what you need when there is only one adult.

Feeding: ask according to what you decide

How to feed your children is for you to decide with your healthcare team. The registry only follows that decision. If you are going to use bottles, you will need more of them and a steriliser with capacity. If not, a few in reserve are enough.

There are nursing pillows designed for two. You do not have to ask for one beforehand: it is one of those things that can be added later, once you know whether you would use it.

Gifts that are not objects

With twins, time is worth more than almost any product. You can say so to anyone who asks.

  • An afternoon of help at home.
  • Cooked meals for the freezer.
  • A walk with the pushchair while you rest.
  • Errands and shopping.

They do not fit on an Amazon registry, but they do fit in the message you share it with.

The order of priority

  1. Safety: car seats and somewhere to sleep.
  2. Hygiene: nappies, changing table and bath.
  3. Getting about: pushchair.
  4. Clothes for the first weeks.
  5. Everything else, after the birth.

If the budget of those giving does not stretch to everything, let it stretch in this order.

Before accepting something on loan

  • Is it complete and with its instructions?
  • Can it be washed or cleaned thoroughly?
  • Does it fit at home alongside what you already have?
  • Does it have to be returned, and when?

Borrowed things help a great deal, but they also take up room. Accept what fills a gap on your registry and say thank you for the rest. When you accept something, delete it from the registry so that nobody gives it.

The registry after the birth

Do not close it when they are born. The first weeks show what is really missing, and there are still people who want to give.

  1. Remove what you already have or have found you do not use.
  2. Add consumables in the next size.
  3. Add what you have found you were missing.
  4. Note who gives each thing, for the thank-yous.

With two newborns, thanking people one by one is hard work. A short message with a photo, sent in one batch, is more than enough.

In short

  1. Double what they use at the same time; one is enough of what is used in turns.
  2. The pushchair changes model: measure first.
  3. Bring the registry forward by a month.
  4. Fill half the registry with affordable gifts.
  5. Consumables are the gift there is never too much of.

Once you have it clear, you create it free on Amazon.es from the baby registry guide.
