How to cancel Amazon Prime and when you get a refund
In short
You can cancel Amazon Prime at any time from the Prime section of your account, using the option to end your membership. If you cancel during the free trial, you pay nothing. If you have already been charged and have not used any benefit since the charge, Amazon says it refunds the full fee, and it confirms this on screen before you accept. Audible, Kindle Unlimited and Music Unlimited are not cancelled with Prime: they are separate.

Full guide: Amazon Prime
| Your situation | What happens when you cancel | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| You are on the free trial | The trial ends without renewing | Nothing |
| You have just been charged and have not used Prime | Amazon says you get a full refund | Nothing, after the refund |
| You have already used benefits this period | The membership does not renew | The current period |
| You pay month by month | There are no further charges | At most, the current month |
Before you cancel: check these three things
Cancelling takes a minute, but it is worth spending another one on three facts. They are all on your Prime membership page, inside your Amazon account.
- Renewal date: the day Amazon would charge you again.
- Type of plan: monthly, at €4.99, or annual, at €49.90.
- Last charge: when it was and whether you have used any benefit since then.
With those three facts you know whether to cancel today, wait until the day before renewal or ask for the refund.
How to cancel Amazon Prime step by step
- Sign in to Amazon.es with your account.
- Open “Account & Lists” and choose your Prime membership section.
- Find the option to manage your membership and choose to end it.
- Amazon will offer alternatives, such as a reminder before the charge. Keep going to the end if you want to cancel.
- Confirm. You will receive an email with the date Prime ends: keep it.
The exact button names change from time to time, but the route is always the same: account, Prime, manage, end. If you signed up from the mobile app, the process works the same from the website.
Cancelling during the free trial
This is the simplest case. The Amazon Prime trial lasts 30 days and becomes a paid membership if you do nothing. When you cancel it, you choose not to continue: there is no charge and Amazon shows you on screen until what day you keep the benefits.
That is why there is no need to wait until day 30. You can decide on day 23, as we suggest in the 30-day plan for the Prime trial, and have it settled with a week to spare.
Cancelling after you have paid: when there is a refund
One rule applies here, set out in Amazon's terms: if you have not used any Prime benefit since the last charge, you can receive a full refund for that period. The cancellation screen tells you whether you qualify before you confirm.
If you have already used a benefit, the usual outcome is that the membership stays active until the end of the paid period and does not renew. You do not lose what you paid for: you keep using it until that date.
What counts as using a benefit
Amazon does not publish a closed list, but common sense helps. Anything you can only do because you are a Prime member counts as use.
- Placing an order with Prime delivery.
- Watching a film or an episode on Prime Video.
- Listening to music with Amazon Music Prime.
- Reading a book from the included selection.
- Buying a deal reserved for Prime members.
If you were charged by surprise and want the refund, the sensible thing is to do none of these until it is sorted.
Monthly or annual: what changes when you cancel
On the monthly plan, cancelling stops the next charge and little else: at most you lose the days left in the month. On the annual plan more is at stake, because you have paid for twelve months at once.
| Months left on your annual plan | Value of what you keep |
|---|---|
| 1 month | €4.16 |
| 3 months | €12.48 |
| 6 months | €24.95 |
| 9 months | €37.43 |
| 11 months | €45.74 |
The table is our own calculation: it spreads the €49.90 of the annual plan over twelve months, at €4.16 each. It is useful for one thing: if there is no refund, do not rush. Cancelling today or the day before renewal costs the same, and in the meantime you keep the benefits.
What you lose when you cancel
- Fast delivery at no extra cost.
- Prime Video, and with it any channels you have added.
- Amazon Music Prime.
- The extended Amazon Photos storage.
- Access to reserved deals, such as Prime Day.
Two warnings. Prime Video channels depend on Prime, so they stop being available with it. And if you keep photos on Amazon Photos, check beforehand what happens to them when you go back to the free allowance.
What is not cancelled with Prime
This is the most expensive mistake. Cancelling Prime does not cancel Amazon's other subscriptions, because they are separate contracts, each with its own fee.
- Audible: €9.99 a month.
- Kindle Unlimited: €9.99 a month.
- Amazon Music Unlimited: €12.99 a month.
If you want to leave everything, go through the full list. We explain it in where to see and cancel all your Amazon subscriptions.
Alternatives to cancelling
Sometimes the problem is not Prime but how you pay for it. Before you leave, see whether one of these options suits you better.
- Switching from annual to monthly: you pay only for the months you use it. See Prime monthly or annual.
- Using it seasonally: two months a year cost €9.98.
- Applying for Prime Student if you study or are aged 18 to 24: it costs half. We compare them in Amazon Prime or Prime Student.
If you were charged unexpectedly
It usually happens when the free trial ends. It is not an Amazon error: the trial renews on its own. But it can be fixed if you act quickly.
- Do not use any Prime benefit.
- Go to your membership and end it.
- Read the screen: it says whether you qualify for the refund.
- If it does not appear, write to customer service from your account.
- Wait a few days: the money returns to the original payment method.
Common mistakes
- Deleting the app and thinking that cancels it. It does not.
- Removing the card instead of cancelling. The membership stays alive.
- Cancelling Prime and forgetting the other subscriptions.
- Using Prime Video “one last time” and then asking for the refund.
- Not keeping the confirmation email.
Coming back to Prime later
Cancelling is not final. You can sign up again whenever you like, on the monthly or the annual plan. The free trial, however, is meant for new customers: the offer page tells you whether your account can take it again.
If you are unsure whether to stay or go, first work out whether Amazon Prime is worth it with your own orders. It takes five minutes and saves regret in both directions.
It depends on how you signed up
Not everyone arrives at Prime by the same route, and you cancel where you signed up.
| How you signed up | Where you cancel |
|---|---|
| On the Amazon website or app | In your Amazon account, Prime section |
| With the free trial | In the same place: it is the same membership |
| As Prime Student | In your Amazon account, just like Prime |
| Inside another company's offer | With the company that included it in your tariff |
The last case catches people out. If Prime came bundled in a package from another company, Amazon does not charge you directly and cancelling does not depend on your account. Check on your bill who charges you before you look for the button.
What happens to orders in progress
What you have already bought does not change. An order placed with Prime delivery arrives on the promised date even if you cancel that same day. What changes is what you order after the membership ends: it will follow the delivery terms of any customer.
Your Amazon account is not touched either. Order history, addresses, lists and returns in progress stay where they were. Cancelling Prime is not closing the account.
If you have Prime Student
The process is identical. There is one detail worth knowing beforehand: the reduced price lasts a maximum of four years. If you cancel and come back later, check on the offer page whether your account still meets the requirements.
The checklist for cancellation day
- Note the renewal date and the amount of the last charge.
- Download or move anything you have stored and want to keep.
- Cancel the Prime Video channels you do not want to keep paying for.
- End the membership and read the confirmation screen.
- Keep the email and check your statement the following month.
The last step sounds excessive and is not. Looking at the statement once confirms there are no further charges and closes the matter.
How long to wait before deciding
If you are unsure, do not cancel in the heat of the moment. Look at your orders from the last three months and your hours of Prime Video. If you have used nothing in that time, the answer is clear. If you have used a single benefit, paying for the monthly plan in the months you need it may be enough.
In short
- Check the renewal date and the last charge.
- Cancel from your account: Prime, manage, end.
- On the free trial you pay nothing.
- With the fee paid and no use, Amazon says you get a full refund.
- Review Audible, Kindle Unlimited and Music Unlimited separately.
