How to cancel a free trial on time: a four-step method

By · Published on · Updated on · 8 min read

In short

Note the end date the same day you start, set a reminder a week before and decide that day whether to continue. Cancelling during the trial costs nothing. If you do not cancel, the subscription becomes a paid one automatically. Start trials one at a time and leave a month between one and the next.

What a free trial is

It is a period in which you use a subscription service without paying. To start it a valid payment method is requested, and when it ends it automatically becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel first. There is no catch in that: it is stated on the sign-up page. It is the usual model for nearly all digital services.

Why the date slips past us

The problem is that the decision to continue or not is put off until a day nobody has written down. You start intending to weigh it up at the end, three weeks go by, a busy spell at work arrives and the first charge appears on the statement. The solution is not to distrust trials but to put a date on them.

The method, in four steps

  1. The day you start, work out the last free day. Thirty days later for most, ninety for Prime Student.
  2. Create a reminder in your phone's calendar seven days before, with the name of the service.
  3. When the reminder goes off, ask yourself a single question: how many times have I used it this week? If the answer is none, cancel.
  4. If you decide to continue, also note the date of the first charge and the amount.

How to work out the date

A 30-day trial that starts on 3 March has its last free day on 2 April. The reminder goes on 26 March. For a 90-day one that starts on 1 September, the last day is 30 November and the reminder, the 23rd. If you would rather not count, the free trial calculator gives you the dates from the day you choose.

The reminder, done properly

A reminder that says "cancel" is no use: when it goes off, you do not remember what. Write the name of the service, the amount that will be charged and where to cancel. For example: "Audible: decide. €9.99 a month from the 2nd. Account, memberships". Set it for a time when you are usually calm, not nine o'clock on a Monday morning.

The question that decides

No analysis is needed. One question is enough: how many times have I used it this week? If the answer is none, you are not going to use it next month. If it is once or twice, think about whether you would pay the fee for that use. If it is every day, stay. The last week of the trial predicts better than any intention.

Where to cancel

All these trials are managed from your Amazon account, in the memberships section. Each active service appears there with its renewal date and the option to cancel. Look at it from time to time even when you have no trial open: it is the quickest way to spot a forgotten subscription. If a service was taken out through your phone's app store, you cancel it there.

Step by step

  1. Go into your Amazon account.
  2. Open the memberships section.
  3. Choose the service you want to cancel.
  4. Follow the screens through to the final confirmation.
  5. Check that you receive the email confirming the cancellation.

The fourth step has a catch: there are usually several screens in between with offers to make you stay. The cancellation is not effective until the last one. If you close before then, you are still subscribed.

What happens if you cancel early

With many services you keep access until the last day of the trial even if you cancel earlier, but not with all. The cancellation screen says so before you confirm. Read it: if you lose access at once, wait for the seven-day reminder. If you keep it, you can cancel on the first day and enjoy the whole month at no risk.

What to do if you missed it

Go into your account as soon as possible and cancel so that there is no second charge. Then check the service's refund terms, which depend on how much time has passed and on whether you have used it since the charge. The sooner you act, the better. And note where the system failed: nearly always it is that the reminder did not exist.

Offers to make you stay

When you cancel, the service will often offer you something not to leave: another free month, a reduced price for a while or the option to pause. Sometimes they are worth it. Before accepting, ask yourself the same question as always: have I used it?

A discount on something you do not use is still an expense. If you accept an extension, note the new date at that very moment, because the old reminder no longer applies.

Do not rely on the reminder email

Some services send an email before renewal. Do not turn it into your system: it can arrive late, end up in the promotions folder or not be sent. The only reliable reminder is the one you put in the calendar yourself on the first day. The email, if it arrives, is a confirmation.

Coming back later

Cancelling is not a final decision. The account is kept and you can subscribe again when you need to, normally without a free trial this time. For services you use in seasons, such as a video platform in the month of a premiere or a reading subscription in summer, going in and out is the cheapest way of having them.

One trial at a time

Starting several on the same day seems efficient and is not. You use one and the others expire unopened. Order them by interest and leave a month between one and the next. That way each service has your attention and each date is easy to remember.

An order that works

MonthTrialWhy in this order
1Amazon PrimeIt opens the door to the long Audible trial
2AudibleWith Prime active, the trial is 3 months
3Kindle UnlimitedBetter in a month with time to read
4Music UnlimitedBefore a trip, to try the downloads

It is a suggestion. The important thing is not to overlap those that compete for the same time, such as two reading services.

Trials within trials

Prime Video channels have their own trials, independent of the Prime one. If you switch one on during the Prime trial, you have two different dates. And cancelling Prime does not necessarily cancel the channels on the same date. Note each one separately. We explain it in Prime Video Channels.

Checking your bank statement

Once a month, look at the small, repeated charges on your account. Forgotten subscriptions are precisely that: amounts of five or ten euros that recur without drawing attention. If you find a charge you do not recognise, look first in the memberships section of your accounts before becoming alarmed.

A review every three months

As well as the statement, do a quarterly review of all your subscriptions, not just Amazon's. Write them in a note with three columns: service, amount and renewal date. Cross out those you have not used in the last month. Fifteen minutes four times a year usually save more than a hundred euros.

In a household with several people

Forgotten trials multiply when several family members use the same account or the same card. Agree on a simple rule: whoever starts a trial sets the reminder and tells the others. And check whether there are duplicate subscriptions, such as two music services or two Primes in the same household.

Is it all right to try and cancel?

Yes. Trials exist for that: so that you can check whether the service is useful to you before paying for it. Cancelling when it does not convince you is using the trial as it was designed. What makes no sense is the opposite: paying for months for something you do not use because you did not make the decision in time.

Signs that it is worth staying

  • You used it several times a week throughout the trial.
  • It replaces something you were already paying for.
  • You thought of it on days when you could not use it.
  • The fee is less than you used to spend on the same thing.

Signs that it is worth cancelling

  • You used it a lot in the first week and not at all afterwards.
  • You already have another service that does the same.
  • You cannot remember when you last opened it.
  • You would keep it "just in case".

Common mistakes

  • Not noting the date on the first day.
  • Setting a reminder without the name of the service.
  • Closing the window before the final confirmation.
  • Starting several trials at once.
  • Leaving the decision for the last day.

In short

Date, reminder, question and decision. With those four steps, a free trial is exactly that: free. You have the comparison of all the trials and the date calculator in free trials, and more habits for spending less in how to shop on Amazon.es and save.

The subscription renews automatically and the fee starts to be charged.

Where do I cancel an Amazon trial?

In the memberships section of your Amazon account, or in the app store if you signed up from your phone.

When should I cancel?

Decide a week before the last free day and cancel with time to spare.

Can I take several trials at once?

You can, but it is better to take them one at a time and leave a month between them so that you really use them.

What is a free trial?

A period in which you use a subscription service without paying. It asks for a payment method and, if not cancelled, becomes a paid subscription.

What is the method for not paying for a forgotten trial?

Four steps: work out the last free day, set a reminder seven days before, ask yourself how much you have used it and decide.

How do I work out the last day of a 30-day trial?

A trial that starts on 3 March has its last free day on 2 April; the reminder would go on 26 March.

What should I write in the cancellation reminder?

The name of the service, the amount that will be charged and where to cancel. A reminder that just says "cancel" is no use.

Which question helps decide whether to keep a subscription?

How many times have I used it this week? If the answer is none, you will not use it next month.

What are the steps to cancel an Amazon subscription?

Go into your account, open the memberships section, choose the service, follow the screens to the final confirmation and check for the confirmation email.

Why does a cancellation sometimes not go through?

Because there are usually several screens with offers in between. The cancellation is not effective until the last one.

Do I lose access if I cancel the trial before it ends?

With many services you keep it until the last day, but not with all. The cancellation screen says so before you confirm.

What if I missed the date and have been charged?

Cancel as soon as possible to avoid a second charge and check the service's refund terms.

Should I accept the offer that appears when I cancel?

Only if you have used the service. A discount on something you do not use is still an expense; if you accept, note the new date.

Can I rely on the renewal reminder email?

Not as a system: it can arrive late or land in another folder. The reliable reminder is the one you set yourself on day one.

Can I subscribe again after cancelling?

Yes. The account is kept and you can subscribe again, normally without a free trial this time.

In what order should I take the Amazon trials?

One suggestion: Prime, then Audible, which has a 3-month trial with Prime, then Kindle Unlimited and finally Music Unlimited.

Does cancelling Prime also cancel Prime Video channels?

Not necessarily on the same date. Channels have their own trials and renewals; note each one separately.

How often should I review my subscriptions?

Look at your bank statement once a month and do a full review every three months.
