Cost per use: what Amazon subscriptions really cost you
In short
A subscription is cheap or expensive depending on how much you use it. With annual Amazon Prime, each delivery costs €4.16 if you place one order a month and €2.08 if you place two. With Kindle Unlimited, each book works out at €5.00 if you read two a month. With Audible, €5.00 per audiobook if you listen to two. Divide the fee by your real uses and you have the true price.

Full guide: How to shop and save
| Subscription | Fee | Use | Cost per use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Prime | €49.90 a year | 2 orders a month | €2.08 per order |
| Kindle Unlimited | €9.99 a month | 2 books a month | €5.00 per book |
| Audible | €9.99 a month | 20 hours a month | €0.50 per hour |
| Amazon Music Unlimited | €12.99 a month | 30 hours a month | €0.43 per hour |
The sum almost nobody does
The price of a subscription is fixed. What varies is what it costs you each time you use it. Someone who pays €9.99 a month for Kindle Unlimited and reads one book has paid €9.99 for that book. Someone who reads four has paid €2.50 each.
The formula is a division: fee divided by uses. Every number in this article is our own calculation with the prices checked in October 2026.
Amazon Prime: the cost per order
Prime includes many things, but the easiest to count is delivery. Spread the annual fee over the orders you place in a year.
| Orders per year | Cost per order with annual Prime |
|---|---|
| 6 (one every two months) | €8.32 |
| 12 (one a month) | €4.16 |
| 24 (two a month) | €2.08 |
| 52 (one a week) | €0.96 |
Compare it with what delivery of each order would cost you without Prime, which Amazon shows at checkout. If your cost per order is lower, delivery already pays for the membership and everything else is a bonus.
Watch out for one trap: placing more orders to “get your money's worth” from Prime is not saving. Count only the ones you would have placed anyway.
Prime Video: the cost per hour
If you already have Prime for delivery, Prime Video costs you nothing more. If you have it mainly for video, divide the equivalent monthly fee, €4.16, by the hours you watch.
- 5 hours a month: €0.83 per hour.
- 10 hours a month: €0.42 per hour.
- 20 hours a month: €0.21 per hour.
Removing the adverts costs €1.99 more a month. With 10 hours of use, that is €0.20 per hour. We analyse it in Prime Video with or without adverts.
Kindle Unlimited: the cost per book
| Books per month | Cost per book |
|---|---|
| 1 | €9.99 |
| 2 | €5.00 |
| 3 | €3.33 |
| 4 | €2.50 |
| 5 | €2.00 |
The fair comparison is with what you would pay for those same books bought one by one. If an ebook of the kind you read costs more than your cost per book, the flat rate pays off.
There is one condition: the books you want to read must be in the catalogue. Check first with the five-book method in is Kindle Unlimited worth it?.
Audible: the cost per audiobook and per hour
An average-length audiobook runs to about ten hours. On that basis, the fee of €9.99 a month gives these costs.
| Listening per month | Ten-hour audiobooks | Cost per hour | Cost per audiobook |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 hours | Half | €2.00 | €19.98 |
| 10 hours | 1 | €1.00 | €9.99 |
| 20 hours | 2 | €0.50 | €5.00 |
| 30 hours | 3 | €0.33 | €3.33 |
Half an hour a day is about 15 hours a month: an audiobook and a half. That is the level of use from which Audible starts to pay off for most people.
Amazon Music Unlimited: the cost per hour
| Listening per month | Cost per hour |
|---|---|
| 10 hours | €1.30 |
| 20 hours | €0.65 |
| 30 hours (one a day) | €0.43 |
| 60 hours (two a day) | €0.22 |
Music is the subscription that builds up most hours, which is why its cost per hour falls fast. The question here is a different one: if the music included with Prime is already enough, the cost of Music Unlimited is all extra.
How to count your real uses
- Open your order history and count last year's orders.
- Look in the Kindle app at the books you finished in the last three months.
- Check your hours listened in Audible.
- Note for a week how much music you play and multiply it by four.
Use what you have done, not what you plan to do. Subscriptions are taken out with the plan of reading more and paid for with what you actually read.
Set your own threshold
There is no single right figure for everyone. Decide how much you are willing to pay for a book, for an hour of audio or for a delivery, and compare it with your cost per use.
- If your cost is below your threshold, the subscription pays off.
- If it is above it two months running, cancel it.
- If it is close, switch to using it only some months of the year.
The case of having it all
Prime, Kindle Unlimited, Audible and Music Unlimited come to €37.96 a month. For every euro to earn its keep, you would have to use all four regularly. Usually one or two account for almost all the use.
That is why we recommend trying them one at a time before keeping any.
When cost per use misleads
- When you use more only to justify the fee.
- When you count uses you would have had for free some other way.
- When you compare with a price you would never have paid.
- When you forget that an unused subscription costs the whole fee.
If you pay for Prime month by month
| Orders per month | Cost per order with monthly Prime |
|---|---|
| 1 | €4.99 |
| 2 | €2.50 |
| 4 | €1.25 |
The monthly plan works out a little dearer per order than the annual one, but it has an advantage for this sum: you can switch it on only in the months when you place several orders. In a month with four orders, each one costs you €1.25.
With Prime Student
At half the price, everything costs half per use. On the annual plan of €24.95, one order a month works out at €2.08, and two at €1.04.
A complete example
A person with annual Prime, Kindle Unlimited and Audible does these sums with last month's use.
| Subscription | Use in the month | Fee for the month | Cost per use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Prime | 2 orders | €4.16 | €2.08 per order |
| Kindle Unlimited | 1 book | €9.99 | €9.99 per book |
| Audible | 6 hours | €9.99 | €1.67 per hour |
The reading is clear. Prime works out well. Kindle Unlimited has cost them one book at bookshop price. And Audible, at six hours, comes to €1.67 an hour: little more than half an audiobook for €9.99. On those figures, they would keep Prime and review the other two.
The sum on a piece of paper
- Write down each subscription and its monthly fee.
- Next to it, last month's uses.
- Divide the fee by the uses.
- Mark the ones that exceed your threshold.
- Repeat the following month before deciding.
One bad month decides nothing: we all have weeks without reading. Two months running above your threshold is a signal.
When it pays to subscribe seasonally
If your use is concentrated at certain times, the answer is not to cancel for good but to pay only for those months. None of these subscriptions has a lock-in.
- Kindle Unlimited in summer and at Christmas: three months come to €29.97.
- Audible in the months with most journeys.
- Monthly Prime in November and December: €9.98.
If you share it
On plans designed for several people, the cost per use is divided. The Music Unlimited family plan, at €22.99 a month, works out at €5.75 per person between four. The full sum is in the Amazon Music Unlimited family plan.
What cannot be measured in uses
Some benefits do not fit into a division. Prime's photo storage is not “used” so many times a month: it is simply there. Deals reserved for members only count if you were going to buy that product. For these benefits the question is a different one: would you pay for them if they were sold on their own?
If the answer is no, leave them out of the sum. That way you avoid justifying a fee with things you do not really value.
An example of thresholds
| Use | Example threshold | Met with |
|---|---|---|
| A delivery | €3.00 | Annual Prime and 17 orders a year or more |
| An ebook | €5.00 | Kindle Unlimited and 2 books a month |
| An hour of audiobook | €1.00 | Audible and 10 hours a month |
| An hour of music | €0.50 | Music Unlimited and 26 hours a month |
The thresholds are an example, not a recommendation: each person sets their own. The third column comes from dividing the fee by the threshold. With yours, the sum is the same.
In short
- Cost per use: fee divided by real uses.
- Annual Prime with two orders a month: €2.08 per order.
- Kindle Unlimited with two books a month: €5.00 per book.
- Audible with 20 hours a month: €0.50 per hour.
- Set your threshold and review every two months.
The prices of every subscription, with their annual cost, are in the Amazon subscription comparison.
