Channels
Prime Video Channels: how they work, what they cost and how not to pile up fees
In short
Prime Video channels are individual subscriptions added to a Prime account. Each channel has its own monthly fee and, in many cases, its own free trial, and is cancelled separately with no minimum term. The risk lies in the total: several active channels you barely watch can cost more than Prime itself. The sensible way to use them is to sign up to watch something specific and cancel when you finish.

What Prime Video channels are
Prime Video Channels is a service that lets Amazon Prime customers add themed channels from other companies to their account and pay only for the ones they want. There are no fixed bundles and no contracts: each channel is taken out and cancelled independently. The content appears inside the same Prime Video app, next to what you already have.
You need Prime
Channels cannot be taken out on their own. They are an add-on for people who are already Prime customers. If you are not, you first need the subscription, which has its own 30-day trial. It is worth being clear about this when doing the sums: the real cost of a channel is its fee plus the Prime fee, unless you already pay for Prime for other reasons.
How you subscribe
From the channels section of Prime Video you choose one, check its price and trial period, and switch it on with your account. Payment is taken through the payment method on your Amazon account. From that moment its content appears inside the same app, on the TV, phone or tablet, with nothing else to install.
Where to watch them
On the same devices where you watch Prime Video: internet-connected televisions, streaming players, phones, tablets and computers. There is no separate app for each channel. That is their main convenience: one remote, one search and one bill.
Each channel's free trial
Many channels offer a trial period, but not all, and not always of the same length. The channel's page says so before you switch it on. A channel's trial is independent of the Prime trial and of other channels' trials: each has its own start and end date. If you try three channels, you have three dates to remember.
How they differ from what Prime includes
| Included with Prime | Paid channel | Rental or purchase | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Within the Prime fee | The channel's monthly fee | Price per title |
| What you get | The included catalogue | The channel's whole catalogue | One specific title |
| Renewal | With Prime | Each month, separately | None |
| How to recognise it | The title page says so | It asks you to subscribe to the channel | It shows a price |
This distinction avoids the commonest confusion: finding a film in the search, pressing play and discovering that it belongs to a channel you do not have.
What kinds of channel there are
The line-up changes over time, so there is no sense in giving a closed list. In general they are specialist channels: arthouse cinema, classic films, documentaries, music and concerts, ad-free children's content, series from one country or one genre. What they have in common is that they cover a specific interest that general platforms only touch on in passing.
The problem of the total
Each channel costs little on its own, and that is the risk. Three active channels you barely watch can cost more per month than the Prime subscription itself. Since each renews on a different date, the charges go unnoticed on the statement. It is the same mechanism as any small subscription: individually it does not hurt, and together they weigh.
A calculation to make it clear
Suppose three channels with a hypothetical fee of €5 a month each. That is €15 a month and €180 a year, more than three times what Prime costs on annual payment at October 2026 prices. If you only watch one of those three regularly, you are paying €120 a year for nothing. Do the same sum with the real fees of the channels you have active.
The in-and-out method
- Choose a channel for specific content, not for the catalogue in general.
- Switch it on and note the day it renews.
- Watch what you wanted to watch during that month.
- Cancel before the renewal. You can come back when there is something new.
Channels have no minimum term, so this use is perfectly normal. You pay only for the months when you watch.
An example calendar
In January you switch on a film channel to watch a particular season of films and cancel on the 28th. In February you have none. In March you switch on a documentary channel because a series you care about is released, and you cancel when you finish it.
At the end of the quarter you have paid two monthly fees instead of six, and you have watched exactly what you wanted. That is the use they are designed for.
How to keep track
Keep a note on your phone with two columns: channel and renewal date. Once a month, go into your account and check which channels are active. If a channel has gone two months unopened, cancel it. It is a two-minute review that saves more than any offer.
Where to see what you have active
In your Amazon account, the memberships section shows each active channel with its fee and its next charge date. You can also check it from the Prime Video settings. Look there, and not in your memory: it is common to discover a channel switched on months ago to watch a single film.
How to cancel
From that same section, channel by channel. Cancelling costs nothing. The confirmation screen says until when you keep access; read it before accepting. Cancelling a channel does not affect your Prime subscription or the other channels.
Avoiding accidental sign-ups
In a home with children, or with a remote that passes through many hands, it is easy to switch on a channel without meaning to. The Prime Video settings let you require a PIN for purchases and subscriptions. Turn it on. It takes a minute and avoids the classic charge that nobody at home recognises.
Channels with children at home
Ad-free children's channels are among the most requested, and also among those that stay active longest without anyone watching. A child's tastes change in weeks: the series they watch on a loop today stops interesting them next month. Switch the channel on when they ask for it, check after three weeks whether they still use it and cancel as soon as interest fades. Use the kids' profile so that they only see content suited to their age.
What happens to what you were watching
If you cancel a channel halfway through a series, you lose access to that content when the paid period ends. Your progress is usually kept in the account, so if you switch the channel on again later you can pick up where you left off.
That is why it pays to work out beforehand how long you will take to watch what interests you: if it is three seasons, you may need two months and not one.
Channels and annual Prime payment
Having Prime on annual payment changes nothing about channels: they are still charged month by month and each on its own. It is easy to believe that, with the year paid, everything is included. It is not. Look at your bank statement: channel charges appear separately, in small amounts that go unnoticed among other spending.
Who they make sense for
- Anyone looking for something very specific that general platforms do not cover.
- Anyone who wants to watch one particular series or season of films and then cancel.
- Families who want ad-free children's content for a while.
- Fans of a genre who have already exhausted what Prime includes.
Who they do not suit
- Anyone who is not a Prime customer and does not plan to be.
- Anyone who watches a bit of everything: what Prime includes is usually enough.
- Anyone who forgets to cancel subscriptions.
- Anyone who already pays for several platforms and never finishes using them.
Channel within Prime or separate platform
Some services can be taken out as a channel within Prime Video or directly in their own app. As a channel, the advantage is convenience: everything in one place and simple cancellation. On their own, they may have different features or catalogue. If a particular service interests you, compare the two routes before deciding: price, catalogue and compatible devices.
Before switching on a channel
- What exactly do I want to watch?
- How long is the trial and how much does it cost afterwards?
- What day does it renew?
- Is that content already included with Prime or on another platform I pay for?
The fourth question saves more needless sign-ups than it seems. Catalogues overlap and it is not rare to pay for a channel for something you already had.
Common mistakes
- Switching on a channel to watch one film and leaving it for months.
- Trying several at once and not remembering the dates.
- Confusing a channel's content with what Prime includes.
- Not protecting purchases with a PIN.
- Never checking the memberships section.
In short
Channels are a good tool if used with an exit date. Go in, watch what you wanted and leave. The Prime Video Channels guide brings together the facts and the link to the available channels; what Prime Video includes at no extra cost is in the Prime Video guide, and the general method for avoiding charges is in how to cancel a free trial on time.
