Prime Video: how to use the 30-day trial without overpaying
In short

To make the most of it, list what you want to watch beforehand, check that each title is included with Prime and start the trial when you have free time. What Prime Video is
Prime Video is Amazon's video streaming platform. In Spain it is not taken out separately: it is part of the Amazon Prime subscription, along with delivery and the other benefits. That is why its free trial is the Prime trial. Whoever starts one has both.
Why it pays to prepare
Thirty days seem like a lot and go quickly. The usual mistake is to start the trial and spend the first week deciding what to watch. Do it the other way round: decide first and start afterwards. With ten minutes of preparation, the trial gives you time for three or four series and several films, which is enough to know whether the catalogue interests you.
Before you start: make your list
Go into Prime Video without a subscription and browse the catalogue. Note five or six titles you really fancy: a long series, a couple of films, something different from what you usually watch. You need no more. Start the trial when you have a free weekend or a holiday ahead of you.
What is included and what is not
Three types of content live side by side in the app: content included with Prime, content to rent or buy, and content belonging to paid channels. Each title's page says which it is. Before getting excited about a title, check that it carries the included-with-Prime mark. That way you avoid paying a rental fee thinking it was part of the trial.
| Type of content | Part of the trial? | How to recognise it |
|---|---|---|
| Included with Prime | Yes | The title page says so |
| Rental or purchase | No | It shows a price |
| Paid channel | No | It asks you to subscribe to the channel |
Channels, separately
Within Prime Video there are themed channels that are taken out one by one, each with its own fee and, sometimes, its own trial. They are not part of the Prime trial. If you switch one on, note its renewal date separately. We explain how they work in Prime Video Channels.
Adverts
Prime Video may show adverts during playback and offers a paid option to remove them. The terms and price of that option change, so check them on the page. Bear it in mind when judging the trial: what you see during those 30 days is the standard experience, with whatever adverts apply.
Where to watch it
Prime Video works on internet-connected televisions, streaming players, phones, tablets and computers. Install the app on the TV on the first day: on a small screen you see less and give up sooner. The three ways of getting it onto the television are in how to watch Prime Video on your TV.
Downloads for watching offline
On phones and tablets you can download episodes and films to watch without internet. It is handy for a train or plane journey. Download over wifi before you leave and check that the title allows it, because not all do. Downloads expire after a while, so do not make them weeks in advance.
A four-week plan
- Week 1: the series you most want to see.
- Week 2: two films from the list.
- Week 3: something you would not have chosen, to measure the catalogue.
- Week 4: decide. If you still have titles pending, it makes sense to continue.
The third week is the most revealing. If, once off your list, you find nothing you fancy, the catalogue will run short for you within two months.
If you share the account at home
Prime Video lets you create separate profiles within one account. Create one for each person on the first day of the trial. That way each person's recommendations and watchlist do not get mixed up, and it is easier to know at the end who used it and how much. If there are children at home, there is a kids' profile type that limits the content shown.
Controls for minors
As well as the kids' profile, the settings let you restrict purchases with a PIN, so that nobody rents a film by accident. Turn it on the first day if there are children or teenagers at home. It is one of those options you only miss when a charge arrives that nobody recognises.
How to measure whether it is worth it
At the end of the trial, ask yourself three questions. How many hours did I watch? Do I still have things to see? Would I drop another platform to keep this one? If you watched fewer than five hours in a month, you are not going to use it.
If you have titles pending and are willing to drop another, it is worth it. Remember that the fee also includes delivery, which you may use more than the video.
Prime Video versus having several platforms
Most households pay for more platforms than they watch. Use the trial to have a clear-out: note how much time you give each one during that month. It is usual to discover that one or two account for almost all the viewing. A strategy that works is rotating: keep one fixed and alternate the others by the month, according to what is being released.
Watching in seasons
You do not need to be subscribed all year. If only one series interests you, you can switch Prime on in the month the season comes out, watch it and cancel. On monthly payment, that costs €4.99 per season at October 2026 prices. For that use, the monthly plan is better than the annual, as we explain in Prime monthly or annual.
Language and subtitles
During playback you can change the audio language and turn on subtitles for titles that offer them. If you want to watch in the original version, check in the first week that your series have it, because not all the catalogue offers the same languages. It is also a good way of practising a language: original audio with subtitles in that same language.
Picture quality and connection
The quality you see depends on your connection and your television as much as on the platform. If the picture looks blurred or stops, try moving the router closer, connecting the TV by cable or closing other downloads in the house. Do it during the trial and not afterwards: knowing how it really looks in your living room is part of what you are assessing.
An example of the balance
Suppose that by day 23 you have watched an eight-episode series and three films, about sixteen hours in all, and two titles on your list remain. You have also placed three orders with free delivery. For that use, continuing makes sense. If instead you watched two stray episodes and never opened the app again, the answer is to cancel: it is not that the catalogue is bad, it is that it is not for you right now.
If you travel outside Spain
The available catalogue can vary from one country to another, and what you watch at home is not always available abroad. If you are going to travel during the trial, first download to your phone or tablet what you want to watch and check that it plays offline. That way you do not depend on the hotel network or on which titles are offered there.
Day 23
Put a reminder in your calendar for a week before the end. Decide that day. If you cancel, do it from your Amazon account, in the memberships section, and read the confirmation screen: it tells you until when you keep access. The free trial calculator gives you the exact date from the day you start.
When it ends
If you do not cancel, the Prime subscription begins, which also includes delivery. If only one series interested you and you have already seen it, cancel without a second thought: you can subscribe again for a month when the next season is released. Your list and your history are kept in the account.
If you are a student or aged 18 to 24
Prime Student includes Prime Video just as standard Prime does, with a 90-day trial and at half price. Three months give you far more of the catalogue. If you meet the requirements, start there: they are in the Prime Student guide.
Common mistakes
- Starting the trial without knowing what you want to watch.
- Renting a film thinking it was included.
- Watching only on your phone and concluding it is not worth it.
- Switching on a paid channel and forgetting that it renews separately.
- Not setting the cancellation reminder.
In short
List first, trial afterwards and decision on day 23. The Prime Video guide brings together the facts about the service and the link to get started, and the general plan for the Prime trial is in how to make the most of the 30 days.
