How many gifts should you put on a wedding registry? Rule, table and examples
In short
Put one gift on the registry for every invitation you send, not for every guest. For a wedding of 120 people that means about 60 gifts. Half of them should cost under €50, a good third between €50 and €150, and the rest can be big gifts for groups to share. The sensible minimum is ten gifts and, above a hundred, the registry stops being comfortable to browse.

Count invitations, not guests
The first mistake is counting people. Guests nearly always come as a couple or as a family and give a single gift per household. If you count heads, the registry comes out twice as long as it needs to be and, a week after you share it, it still looks half untouched.
That has an effect nobody wants: whoever opens it sees dozens of gifts that have not been bought and concludes the registry is not being used.
Counting invitations gives a realistic number. A wedding of 120 guests usually means about 60 invitations, because most are addressed to two people. If you have many single guests or many families with children, adjust: what counts is how many separate households are going to give a gift.
Why the registry does not have to cover everyone
In Spain a good share of guests prefer to give money. It is a well-established custom and there is nothing to fix about it. That is why the registry does not need a gift for every person: its job is to offer choices to people who want to give an object and do not know which, to those who cannot attend and want to send something, and to groups that would rather club together for something big.
With one gift per invitation there is plenty of room for everyone to choose between several options within their budget. If nearly all your guests are envelope-givers, the registry can be even shorter, as we explain in wedding registry or cash.
How to split the prices
The number matters less than the mix. A registry of 60 expensive gifts shuts out colleagues, younger friends and anyone already stretching to travel to the wedding. The proportion that works best is simple: half the gifts under €50, a little over a third between €50 and €150, and the rest above that.
The lowest band is the one that moves most. Those are the gifts chosen by people coming alone, by guests invited out of courtesy and by last-minute buyers. The middle band is chosen by couples and close friends. The top band is almost never bought by one person: it is bought by groups.
The table by size of wedding
This table applies the rule to five sizes of wedding. We assume two people per invitation; if your average is different, use the invitations column as your reference.
| Guests | Invitations | Gifts on the registry | Up to €50 | €50 to €150 | Over €150 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 20 | 20 | 10 | 7 | 3 |
| 80 | 40 | 40 | 20 | 14 | 6 |
| 120 | 60 | 60 | 30 | 21 | 9 |
| 160 | 80 | 80 | 40 | 28 | 12 |
| 200 | 100 | 100 | 50 | 35 | 15 |
If you would rather have the sum done with your exact figures, the calculator in the wedding registry guide does the maths and adds the dates for creating and sharing the registry.
What kind of gift goes in each band
- Up to €50: towel sets, sheets, glasses, a good frying pan, photo frames, blankets, quality kitchen utensils. Small things you use every day.
- From €50 to €150: a cookware set, cutlery, a duvet, small appliances, a cabin suitcase, lamps. Purchases a couple puts off and a guest is happy to make.
- Over €150: a food processor, a vacuum cleaner, a complete dinner service, patio furniture, a quality large suitcase. Gifts meant for a group.
Not everything has to be for the house. The Amazon.es wedding registry accepts products from any category, so there is room for travel gear, sport or the hobbies you share.
Big gifts: few and really wanted
A gift of more than €150 needs someone to organise a collection: a sibling, a circle of friends, the people at the office. Each group gives one big gift, and an average wedding has four or five groups like that. That is why 15% of the registry is enough.
For that band, choose things you really want. An expensive gift added as filler is the one that ends up unbought, and a registry with six untouched expensive gifts suggests you asked for too much. Three you would love are better than ten just in case.
Five mistakes that keep happening
- Listing only homeware. If you already live together, you probably own frying pans and glasses.
- Forgetting inexpensive gifts. They go first and they are what guests on a tight budget appreciate most.
- Repeating a category. Three different sheet sets force the guest to guess which you prefer.
- Not reviewing the registry. Three weeks before the wedding, add five or six affordable gifts for late buyers.
- Building it in a rush the night before the invitations go out. A registry needs a couple of afternoons and a calm review.
How to adjust it after sharing
The registry is not a closed document. Look at it two weeks after you share it. If more than half of the cheap band has already been bought, top it up with gifts at the same price. If the top band is still untouched, do nothing: groups buy late, often in the final week.
If a gift no longer interests you, or you have bought it yourselves, take it off. Guests always see the current version, so nobody will buy something that is no longer there.
Small weddings, very large ones and second weddings
With fewer than 20 guests the rule falls short: list at least ten gifts so whoever opens the registry has a choice. For weddings of more than 200 guests there is no need to go beyond a hundred, because from that point the registry becomes hard to browse and guests stop looking through all of it.
For second weddings, or when you both already have a furnished home, the registry tends to be shorter and to take a different approach: replacing what is worn and upgrading what you use every day. We cover it in what to list if you already live together.
A worked example
A wedding of 80 guests means about 40 invitations and therefore 40 gifts on the registry. Split by price, that is 20 under €50, 14 between €50 and €150 and 6 big gifts to share. If your list comes out at 55, first remove the expensive items you are least excited about.
If it comes out at 25, add quality consumables such as bed linen or towels, which always find a buyer.
How to take it to the Amazon.es wedding registry
Creating the registry is free and only needs an account. You enter your names, the wedding date and the delivery address, and decide whether the registry is public, visible only with the link, or private while you prepare it. Then you share it with a link by email or on social media.
Two features help with everything above. The first is the downloadable thank-you list, which records the gifts received. The second, according to published information about the service, is the option to mark priorities within the registry, which is useful for flagging the gifts that matter most to you.
What to do with the gifts nobody buys
When the wedding is over there are always some gifts left unbought, and it does not mean the registry was badly made. They tend to be the most expensive and the most specific. You have three options: buy them yourselves with part of the money you received, leave them on the registry for a few weeks in case someone gives late, or simply remove them.
According to information published in March 2026, Amazon.es applies a discount after the wedding to whatever was left pending; check the current terms on your registry.
How long it takes to do it well
Less than people fear and more than they usually set aside. Allow two afternoons. In the first one, add nothing: walk through the house, open cupboards and drawers and note on your phone what is missing or worn out. In the second, with that note in front of you, search for each thing and add it to the registry.
Separating the two tasks avoids the most common mistake, which is browsing aimlessly and ending up with a registry full of eye-catching things you did not need. A short third session, a few days later, is for removing whatever no longer convinces you.
Final check before sharing
- The number of gifts is close to the number of invitations.
- Half of them cost less than €50.
- No two gifts compete with each other, such as two dinner services.
- There are at least three gifts meant for groups.
- The delivery address is correct and someone will be there to receive parcels.
- You have opened the link without signing in to see what guests will see.
If the registry passes these six checks, it is ready to send. Everything else can be corrected as you go, because changes show immediately to anyone who opens the link. And if you are still deciding how to tell your guests about it, the wording matters as much as the list itself.
Frequently asked questions about wedding registry gifts
How many gifts go on a wedding registry?
One per invitation sent. For 120 guests, about 60 gifts, with a minimum of ten for small weddings and a comfortable maximum of a hundred.
What should the gifts on the registry cost?
Half under €50, a little over a third between €50 and €150 and the rest above that, meant for groups to buy together.
Is a long registry better than a short one?
A well-sized one. Too many unbought gifts suggest nobody is using the registry; too few leave late buyers without options.
When should we review the registry?
Two weeks after sharing it and again three weeks before the wedding, to top up the affordable gifts already bought.
Can we list gifts that are not for the house?
Yes. The Amazon.es wedding registry accepts products from any category, such as suitcases, sports gear or technology.
Do you count guests or invitations to size a wedding registry?
Invitations. Guests come as couples or families and give one gift per household, so 120 guests means about 60 invitations and about 60 gifts.
What is the minimum number of gifts on a wedding registry?
Ten gifts, even for a very small wedding, so that anyone opening the registry has a choice.
What is the maximum number of gifts worth listing?
About a hundred. Beyond that the registry becomes hard to browse and guests stop looking through all of it.
How many expensive gifts should a wedding registry include?
Around 15% of the list above €150. Groups buy them, and an average wedding has four or five groups that club together for a big gift.
Which gifts under €50 work on a wedding registry?
Towel sets, sheets, glasses, a good frying pan, photo frames, blankets and quality kitchen utensils: small things used every day.
Which gifts between €50 and €150 are usually requested?
A set of pans, cutlery, a duvet, small appliances, a cabin suitcase or lamps. They are purchases a couple puts off and a guest is glad to make.
How many gifts does a wedding with 80 guests need?
About 40: 20 under €50, 14 between €50 and €150 and 6 big gifts to share.
How many gifts does a wedding with 200 guests need?
About 100, which is the comfortable maximum: 50 up to €50, 35 from €50 to €150 and 15 above €150.
Why is one gift per guest not needed?
Because in Spain many guests prefer to give money. The registry serves those who want to give an object, those who cannot attend and groups clubbing together for something big.
What do we do with gifts nobody buys?
You can buy them yourselves with part of the money received, leave them a few weeks in case someone gives late, or remove them. They are usually the most expensive and specific.
Is there a discount on Amazon.es for gifts left unbought?
According to information published in March 2026, Amazon.es applies a discount after the wedding to what was left pending. Check the current terms on your registry.
How long does it take to make a good wedding registry?
Two afternoons: one to walk through your home and note what is missing, another to find each item and add it. A short third session is for removing what no longer convinces you.
What happens if we list too many expensive gifts?
They go unbought and the registry looks as though you asked for too much. Three big gifts you really want are better than ten just in case.
How do we check the registry before sharing it?
Open the link without signing in, check that half the gifts cost under €50, that no two compete with each other and that the delivery address is right.
What happens if we remove a gift after sharing the registry?
Nothing. Guests always see the current version, so nobody will buy something that is no longer there.
