How to watch Prime Video on your TV: three ways and what to do if it fails
In short
There are three ways to watch Prime Video on a TV: with the television's own app if it is a smart TV, with a streaming player connected by HDMI, or with a games console. In all three you sign in with your Amazon account. If the TV is not smart or the app runs slowly, a player is the cheapest solution.

Full guide: Prime Video
| Way | What you need | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| TV app | Smart TV with an internet connection | Anyone with a recent TV |
| Streaming player | A free HDMI port, power and wifi | TVs with no apps or slow ones |
| Games console | Console connected to the TV | Anyone who already has one in the living room |
| Laptop with HDMI cable | A cable and a laptop | Occasional solution |
What you need in every case
All three ways have the same requirements: an Amazon account with Prime active, a stable internet connection and a television with an HDMI input or with apps. You do not need a different account for the TV: it is the same one you use to shop. If you do not have Prime yet, the 30-day free trial includes Prime Video.
Is my TV smart?
If you see a menu with apps when you switch it on, it is. If it only shows channels and inputs, it is not. Smart TVs connect to the internet by wifi or cable. Those from recent years nearly always include Prime Video or let you install it. Older ones may have an app store that is no longer updated: in that case, an external player works better.
With the TV's app
- Connect the TV to the internet from its settings menu.
- Look for Prime Video among the apps or in the TV's store.
- Install it if it is not preinstalled and open it.
- Sign in with your Amazon account.
- Choose your profile.
Signing in without typing on the remote
Many models show a code and a web address on screen. You open that address on your phone, type the code and the TV is linked to your account. It is faster and safer than entering the password letter by letter with the remote. If your TV offers both options, choose the code.
If the app does not appear
First check that the TV's system is up to date, from the settings menu. If after updating it still does not appear in the store, the model is probably no longer supported. It is not worth insisting: an external player costs little and leaves the TV as good as new where apps are concerned.
With a streaming player
If the TV is not smart, or has grown old and the app runs slowly, a player connected to the HDMI port solves it. Amazon's Fire TV devices come with Prime Video built in, and there are other compatible players. They plug into the TV and the mains, connect to the wifi and are operated with their own remote.
What to look for when choosing a player
- That your TV has a free HDMI port.
- That the player's resolution matches your TV's: there is no point paying more for 4K if your screen is not 4K.
- That the wifi reaches the living room well.
- That the remote includes TV volume control, so you do not need two.
- That it has the other apps you use, not just Prime Video.
With a games console
Current consoles have a Prime Video app in their store. It is the most convenient option if the console is already connected to the living-room TV. The drawback is consumption: a console uses more electricity than a small player, and you have to switch it on and wait. For daily use, a player is more practical.
With a laptop and a cable
If you have none of the above, an HDMI cable between the laptop and the TV turns the big screen into a monitor. You open Prime Video in the browser and watch it on the TV. It is an emergency solution, useful in a holiday home or a rented flat with an old TV. For everyday use it is awkward, because you have to get up to operate the laptop.
From your phone
The phone app lets you send the picture to some compatible televisions and players connected to the same wifi network. It is useful in someone else's home or in a hotel, but for daily use the TV app is more stable. If the option to cast does not appear, the device is not compatible or is not on the same network.
Which way to choose
| Your situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Smart TV from recent years | Its own app |
| Old, slow smart TV | Streaming player |
| TV with no apps | Streaming player |
| You already have a console in the living room | The console, or a player if you use it daily |
| Second TV in the bedroom | Small player |
| Travelling | Player in your suitcase, or your phone |
The connection: wifi or cable
Most picture problems are not the platform's but the network's. If the router is far from the living room, the signal arrives weak and the video cuts out. Connecting the TV or the player to the router by cable, when possible, removes the problem. If not, move the router closer, change the wifi channel or place a repeater halfway.
Picture quality
The quality you see depends on four things at once: the title, your television, your player and your connection. It is enough for one of the four to fall short for the picture to drop. If you have a high-resolution TV and everything looks low-definition, check in order: connection, app settings and HDMI cable.
Sound
If you have a soundbar or speakers, connect them to the TV and check in the settings that the audio is coming out through them. When voices sound quiet and music loud, look in the sound settings of the TV or the bar for an option to boost dialogue. It is not a fault of the platform: it is the original mix, designed for cinemas.
Profiles and purchase control
On the TV you choose the same profiles as on your phone. Create one for each person in the house and a kids' one if there are children. Turn on the PIN for purchases and subscriptions as well: with a remote within everyone's reach, it is the only way to avoid rentals and channels taken out by accident.
Language and subtitles
During playback, the options menu lets you change the audio and turn on subtitles for titles that offer them. If the subtitles look small on your TV, the app lets you adjust their size and style from the settings. Do it once and it is saved for your profile.
On a TV that is not yours
If you use Prime Video on someone else's TV, such as in a hotel or a rented flat, sign out before you leave. You can do it from the app itself or, if you forget, from your account settings, in the devices section, where every linked device appears and can be disconnected remotely.
Common problems and how to solve them
- The picture cuts out: move the router closer or connect the TV by cable.
- The app hangs on loading: close it completely and reopen it before restarting the TV.
- It cannot find a title: check that you are in your profile and that the title is still available.
- It asks you to pay for something: it is not included with Prime; it is a rental or a channel.
- There is no sound: check the audio output in the TV's settings.
- It is slow in general: update the app and the TV's system.
A second TV
The same account works for every TV in the house. For a second TV in the bedroom or the kitchen, a small player is the simplest thing. Bear in mind that there is a limit on simultaneous streams per account, which is set out in the service's terms. In a normal household it is rarely reached.
Travelling
A streaming player fits in a pocket and connects to any TV with HDMI and to any wifi. It is the most convenient way of taking your platforms to a holiday home. Remember that the catalogue can vary by country. If the accommodation's wifi is poor, download what you want to watch to your phone or tablet beforehand.
A tip for the trial
If you are going to start the 30 free days, install and test the app before switching them on. That way you do not spend trial days solving connection problems. And if you discover that your TV needs a player, buy it first and start afterwards.
Common mistakes
- Buying a player with a higher resolution than the TV.
- Blaming the platform for wifi that does not reach the living room.
- Typing the password with the remote when there is a code option.
- Leaving the session open on someone else's TV.
- Not turning on the purchase PIN with children at home.
In short
If your TV has apps and runs smoothly, use its own. If not, a streaming player. In both cases, look after the connection before anything else. The Prime Video guide brings together the facts about the service, and in how to use the 30-day trial you have the plan for getting the most out of it.
