Amazon Prime price in Spain: a history of the increases
In short
Amazon Prime costs €49.90 a year or €4.99 a month in Spain since 15 September 2022. Before that it cost €36 a year, between August 2018 and September 2022, and €19.95 until 2018. In total, the annual fee has risen by 150.1% since 2018. In October 2026 it has gone more than four years without a change.

Full guide: Amazon Prime
| Period | Annual fee | Equivalent per month | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Until August 2018 | €19.95 | €1.66 | — |
| August 2018 to September 2022 | €36.00 | €3.00 | 80.5% |
| Since 15 September 2022 | €49.90 | €4.16 | 38.6% |
What Amazon Prime costs today
In October 2026, Amazon Prime costs €49.90 a year or €4.99 a month. Prime Student, for students and people aged 18 to 24, costs half: €24.95 a year or €2.49 a month. The free trial lasts 30 days, and 90 on Prime Student.
Those prices have not changed since September 2022: that is now more than four years without an increase.
The 2018 increase: from €19.95 to €36
At the end of August 2018, Amazon announced that the annual fee was going from €19.95 to €36. It was an increase of 80.5%, the largest the service has had in Spain.
In euros, it was €16.05 more a year. The press at the time explained it by everything that had been added to the membership since launch: Prime Video, music, photo storage and more items with fast delivery.
The 2022 increase: from €36 to €49.90
In July 2022, Amazon announced the second increase, which took effect on 15 September that year. The annual fee went from €36 to €49.90, 38.6% more. The monthly fee rose from €3.99 to €4.99.
Amazon attributed it to higher costs caused by inflation. It applied to new sign-ups from that day and to existing members when their renewal came round.
| Plan | Before | Since September 2022 |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Prime | €36.00 | €49.90 |
| Monthly Prime | €3.99 | €4.99 |
| Annual Prime Student | €18.00 | €24.95 |
| Monthly Prime Student | €1.99 | €2.49 |
How much it has risen in total
Adding the two increases together, the annual fee has gone from €19.95 to €49.90: 150.1% more. Put another way, today it costs two and a half times what it cost until 2018.
The figure needs context. Over that time the service has changed too: what in 2018 was mainly a delivery plan now includes video, music, photos and reading. If you use those benefits, the price for what you get has risen less than the percentage suggests. If you only want delivery, it has risen by all of it.
The price seen month by month
The annual fee looks less striking when spread out. The old €19.95 was €1.66 a month; the €36 was €3.00; today's €49.90 is €4.16. It is our own calculation: the fee divided by twelve.
Compared with the monthly plan, at €4.99, the annual plan saves €9.98 a year. We go into it in Prime monthly or annual.
How Spain compared with other countries in 2022
The 2022 increase was Europe-wide. According to the trade press that summer, these were the annual fees after the change.
| Country | Annual fee from September 2022 |
|---|---|
| Spain | €49.90 |
| Italy | €49.90 |
| France | €69.90 |
| Germany | €89.90 |
| United Kingdom | £95 |
These are 2022 figures and may have changed since in each country. We include them because they explain one idea: Spain and Italy stayed in the cheapest band in western Europe.
Will it go up again?
We do not know, and nobody outside Amazon does. What the data does show is this: four years passed between the first increase and the second, and another four have passed since the second. In October 2026 no change has been announced for Spain.
Be wary of headlines that treat an increase as certain without citing an announcement. Both real increases were announced weeks in advance and with an effective date.
What to do if it goes up
- Check your renewal date: the increase applies on renewal, not before.
- If you renew just before the date, you pay one more year at the old price.
- Work out whether it still pays off with your orders from the last year.
- Compare the annual plan with using the monthly plan for only a few months.
- If you study or are aged 18 to 24, look at Prime Student.
The second point is the most useful. In 2022, anyone whose renewal fell before 15 September paid €36 for a whole extra year.
How to tell whether it is worth it at today's price
The price only means something compared with what you use. At €49.90 a year, each order works out at €4.16 if you place one a month, and €2.08 if you place two. The full sum is in what each use costs and in is Amazon Prime worth it.
Where to see the price you pay
On your Prime membership page, inside your account. It shows your plan, the fee and the date of the next charge. If you have been a member for years, it is worth looking once: many people do not remember whether they are on the monthly or the annual plan.
What has been added to Prime over time
The price cannot be understood without what it includes. These are some dates that can be documented.
| When | What changed |
|---|---|
| December 2016 | Prime Video arrives in Spain, included in the fee |
| May 2018 | Included reading is added, now called Prime Reading |
| August 2018 | First big increase: from €19.95 to €36 a year |
| September 2022 | Second increase: from €36 to €49.90 a year |
| April 2024 | Prime Video starts showing limited advertising |
| June 2025 | Half-price Prime opens to everyone aged 18 to 24 |
The table shows two movements in opposite directions. Until 2018, services were added without touching the price. Since 2022 the price has not risen, but removing the adverts from Prime Video costs €1.99 more a month.
What a member has paid since 2018
An example with numbers. Someone who took out the annual plan in October 2018 and has renewed every October has paid nine fees: four of €36 and five of €49.90.
- Four fees of €36: €144.00.
- Five fees of €49.90: €249.50.
- Total of the nine fees: €393.50.
- Average per fee: €43.72.
It is our own calculation. The average comes out below the current fee because the early years were paid at the previous price.
The monthly plan went up too
Anyone paying month by month went from €3.99 to €4.99 in September 2022. Over a full year, that means going from €47.88 to €59.88. The monthly increase, 25%, was smaller than the annual one, which is why the gap between the two plans narrowed.
What happened to Prime Student
Prime Student went up on the same date and in the same proportion: from €18 to €24.95 a year and from €1.99 to €2.49 a month. It still costs exactly half the price of Prime.
The important change came later. Since June 2025 you no longer need to be a student: being aged 18 to 24 is enough. The requirements are in Prime Student: eligibility and price.
What has not changed
- The free trial is still 30 days.
- There is still no lock-in.
- The annual plan is still cheaper than twelve monthly payments.
- An increase still applies on renewal, not mid-period.
How to read a news story about the Prime price
- See whether it cites an Amazon announcement or just “sources”.
- Check the country: many stories are about the United States.
- See whether it gives an effective date.
- Tell the Prime fee apart from add-ons, such as ad-free video.
- Compare it with your membership page.
The second point prevents many scares. Price changes in the United States do not carry over automatically to Spain, in amount or in date.
Three questions before your next renewal
- How many orders did I place last year that would have paid for delivery?
- How many hours of Prime Video did I watch, and would I have paid for them?
- Do I use anything else that is included, such as the music or the reading?
If the answer to all three is “little”, the price does not matter: the membership does not pay off at any fee. If it is “quite a lot”, four euros a month is still a good deal. The price history helps you understand the past; the decision is made with your use.
The price per day and three terms worth telling apart
Spread over the 365 days of the year, the annual fee works out at €0.14 a day. It is another way of reading the same figure, useful for comparing it with what you use.
- Fee: what you pay for each period, monthly or annual.
- Renewal: the day a new period starts and the fee is charged.
- Effective date: the date from which a new fee applies to sign-ups and renewals.
The three dates do not coincide. That is why an increase announced in July and in force from September may not affect you until the following year, if your renewal falls earlier. It is also why two neighbours with the same plan can pay different amounts for a few months.
In short
- Until 2018: €19.95 a year.
- From 2018 to 2022: €36 a year.
- Since 15 September 2022: €49.90 a year or €4.99 a month.
- Cumulative increase: 150.1%.
- No change announced in October 2026.
