Prime Student: eligibility, price and how to get the 90 free days
In short
Prime Student is the Prime subscription at half price. According to Amazon's June 2025 announcement, students of any age and young people aged 18 to 24 in Spain can get it. What Prime Student is
It is the same Prime subscription, with its fast delivery, its video platform and its music, at half the price and with a free trial three times as long. It is not a cut-down version: the main benefits are identical. What changes is who can get it, how much it costs and for how long that price is kept.
Who can sign up: two routes
According to Amazon's June 2025 announcement, there are two ways in. The first is to be a student, with no age limit. The second is to be between 18 and 24, even if you are not studying. Meeting one of the two is enough. This widens the audience a good deal compared with the usual idea that it is only for university students.
The student route
Students prove their status through Amazon's academic verification system. There is no age limit: it works just the same for someone starting a degree at 18 as for someone doing a master's at 40. Have your institution's details and your academic email to hand, if you have one, because they speed up verification.
The age route
Young people aged 18 to 24 verify their age with an official document. You do not need to be enrolled anywhere. If you work, if you are looking for a job or if you have taken a year out, you qualify all the same. It is the most important new feature of the programme and the one fewest people know about.
What it includes
- Fast, free delivery on millions of products.
- Prime Video, with films, series and original productions.
- Amazon Music Prime.
- Amazon Photos, for storing photos.
- Access to exclusive deals for members.
The same June 2025 announcement mentioned two additional benefits for young people and students: 10% off selected fashion and two free months of Kindle Unlimited. Extras of this kind change often, so confirm them on the page before counting on them.
How much you save over four years
On annual payment, four years of Prime Student cost €99.80. The same four years of Prime cost €199.60. The difference is €99.80, to which you add the two extra months of free trial. For a service that gives exactly the same, it is a saving that demands no effort beyond signing up through the right page.
Monthly or annual?
Twelve single months at €2.49 add up to €29.88. Annual payment costs €24.95, that is, €4.93 less. Annual pays off if you know you will use it all through the academic year. Monthly pays off if you only want it at specific times, for example at the start of term, and plan to cancel in summer. The break-even point is at ten months, as with Prime.
The 90-day trial
Three months is a long time. It covers practically a whole term, with its purchases of supplies, its books and its last-minute orders. It is also more than enough time to forget the trial exists. That is why noting the end date on the first day matters even more than with Prime.
When to start it
The best moment is the week when term begins or when you move into the flat. Those are the weeks with the most orders: supplies, books, things for your room. If you start at the beginning of September, the 90 days take you to the beginning of December. If you would rather it covered Christmas shopping, start in mid-October.
| If you start on | The trial ends around | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 September | 30 November | Start of term and Black Friday |
| 15 October | 13 January | Black Friday, Christmas and Epiphany |
| 1 February | 2 May | Second term |
How to sign up
- Open the Prime Student page from the link in the guide.
- Sign in with your Amazon.es account or create one.
- Choose the route that applies to you: student or age.
- Complete the verification.
- Confirm the payment method. Nothing is charged during the trial.
- Note days 83 and 90 in your calendar.
What to have to hand
Before starting, prepare what you need for the route that applies to you. If you are coming in as a student, your institution's details and your academic email, if you have one, speed up verification. If you are coming in by age, a valid official document. In both cases you need an Amazon.es account and a valid payment method, even though nothing is charged during the 90 trial days.
If verification does not work first time
Check that the details match those on your document or enrolment exactly: a shortened surname or a mistyped date is enough to make it fail. If you meet both conditions, try the other route. And if it still does not work, Amazon's help pages set out the steps to follow. Do not take out standard Prime out of impatience: you would lose half the price and two months of trial.
If you already have standard Prime
Many people aged 18 to 24 pay for full Prime without knowing they can pay half. If that is you, go into your account and look in the membership section at how to move to Prime Student. The terms of the switch are set out there. Even if you cannot use the 90-day trial, the difference in the fee shows from the next renewal.
What happens when the four years are up
The reduced price is kept for a maximum of four years. After that, the subscription moves to the usual Prime rate. Note that date, because the price change means paying double and it is the moment to decide whether you continue. By then you will have four years of order history to do the sums with.
What a student really uses
Delivery, above all. In the first months of term you place many small orders: a cable, a book, a lamp, a charger that breaks the night before an exam. They are exactly the orders that pay for delivery without Prime. Video is used in bursts, more in the holidays than during exams. The included music is good for studying with something on in the background.
If you share a flat
It is enough for one person in the flat to have the subscription for shared orders to arrive with no delivery charges. Agree on who takes it out and how the household's orders are split. Four subscriptions in a flat of four are three too many, unless each of you wants your own video account.
If your parents pay
The subscription must be in the name of the person who meets the requirements, which is you. The payment method can be whatever you agree at home. If your parents already have Prime and you live with them, you may not need a second subscription until you move out. At that point, Prime Student is the logical option.
A full example
Lucía is starting the second year of her degree and moves into a shared flat. She starts Prime Student on 8 September, the week of the move. In three months she places fourteen small orders, nearly all below the free-delivery minimum, and watches two series.
On 30 November her day-83 reminder goes off. She goes over her notes, sees that she has used it every week and decides to continue on the annual plan: €24.95 until the following December. Her flatmate, who hardly ever shops online, cancels the same day without having paid anything.
When it is not worth it
- You live with someone who already has Prime and you order together.
- You buy very few times a year and always above the free-delivery minimum.
- You are not going to use either delivery or video over the coming months.
Even in these cases, the 90-day trial costs nothing if you cancel in time. The risk is not in trying it but in forgetting it.
How to try it without overpaying
- Start the trial when you are really going to use it, for example the week you buy your course supplies.
- Note day 83 in your calendar. You then have seven days to decide.
- If it does not convince you, cancel before day 90. If you do not cancel, the paid subscription begins.
Common mistakes
- Taking out standard Prime when you are entitled to Prime Student.
- Believing it is only for university students and not looking at the age route.
- Starting the trial in summer, when you order least.
- Forgetting the end date: three months is long enough to forget anything.
- Keeping several subscriptions in the same flat.
In short
If you study or are between 18 and 24, there is no reason to pay for full Prime. The Prime Student guide includes a calculator that gives you days 83 and 90 from the date you start, and a sheet for ticking off what you still need for the course.
