Student subscriptions: what an academic year costs

By · Published on · Updated on · 8 min read

In short

A nine-month academic year with Prime Student costs €22.41 paid month by month, less than the €24.95 of the annual plan. In the first year, with the 90-day free trial, it comes to €14.94. Kindle Unlimited and Audible each add €89.91 for the nine months, and Music Unlimited €116.91. The key is to pay only for term-time months and cancel in summer.

Why count by academic years and not calendar years

Student life runs from October to June. In summer the address, the timetable and the needs all change. A subscription that makes sense in November may not in August, and yet it keeps charging.

That is why this article does the sums over nine months. All the figures are our own calculations with the prices checked in October 2026.

Prime Student: monthly or annual for one academic year

Here is the surprise. The annual Prime Student plan costs €24.95. Nine monthly payments of €2.49 come to €22.41. If you only use it during term, paying month by month is cheaper than the annual plan.

Months of useMonthly paymentAnnual planCheaper
6€14.94€24.95Monthly
9€22.41€24.95Monthly
10€24.90€24.95Monthly, by a few cents
11€27.39€24.95Annual
12€29.88€24.95Annual

The annual plan wins from eleven months. If you order things in summer too, choose annual. If you go back to your parents' home in summer, monthly.

The first year: three months free

Prime Student has a 90-day free trial. If you start it in October, you pay nothing for the first three months of the year. That leaves six monthly payments: €14.94 for the whole academic year.

It is the best time to start it: it coincides with start-of-year shopping, when most small orders are placed. The Prime Student guide has the calculator for your dates.

Who can get Prime Student

Students of any age and people aged 18 to 24, studying or not, according to Amazon's announcement of June 2025. The reduced price lasts a maximum of four years. The requirements, one by one, are in Prime Student: eligibility and price.

What four years of a degree cost

OptionFour academic years
Prime Student, nine months a year paid monthly€89.64
Prime Student, annual plan€99.80
Amazon Prime, annual plan€199.60

Between Prime Student used only in term time and Amazon Prime at the normal price there is a difference of €109.96 over four years. The full comparison is in Amazon Prime or Prime Student.

Kindle Unlimited for studying

Nine months of Kindle Unlimited cost €89.91. It pays off if you read two or more books a month for pleasure and they are in its catalogue. Do not count on it for course textbooks: check title by title first.

One fact worth checking: Amazon's June 2025 announcement mentioned two months of Kindle Unlimited for Prime Student members. See on the page whether it still applies before paying for anything.

Audible for the commute

If you travel to class by public transport or on foot, you have listening time every day. Half an hour there and half an hour back is about 20 hours a month: two audiobooks. At €9.99 a month, each one works out at €5.00.

If you live next door to the faculty, you probably will not use it. Nine months come to €89.91.

Music: the included one or the paid one

Prime Student includes Amazon Music Prime. For studying with background music it is usually enough. Music Unlimited, at €12.99 a month, makes sense if you pick every song and download playlists. Nine months come to €116.91: more than the whole academic year of Prime Student.

Before paying for it, use the included music for a month. The difference is in Music Prime or Music Unlimited.

Three combinations and what they cost

The bare minimumPrime Student, nine months€22.41
The readerPrime Student and Kindle Unlimited, nine months€112.32
EverythingPrime Student, Kindle Unlimited, Audible and Music Unlimited, nine months€319.14

Between the bare minimum and the full profile there is a difference of €296.73 per academic year. That is the price of several textbooks.

The student calendar

  1. October: start the Prime Student trial with your start-of-year shopping.
  2. January: the trial ends; decide whether to continue on monthly payment.
  3. February, after exams: try Kindle Unlimited or Audible, one at a time.
  4. June: cancel everything you will not use in summer.
  5. September: reactivate only what you really used.

The step that saves most money is the fourth. Set yourself a reminder for the last week of June.

How to cancel in summer without losing anything

None of these subscriptions has a lock-in. You cancel in June and take them out again in September. The only thing you do not get back is the free trials, which are for new customers. Where each one is managed is in how to see and cancel your subscriptions.

What is worth buying once

A subscription is paid every month; a desk lamp is paid for once. Before adding fees, see whether the money goes further on something you will use for four years. The reasoned lists are in what to bring to a student flat and in how to set up a study desk.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the annual plan and using it for eight months.
  • Starting every trial in the first week of term.
  • Leaving subscriptions active in July and August.
  • Paying for Music Unlimited without having tried the included music.
  • Forgetting that the reduced price lasts four years.

What share of the budget subscriptions take

Looked at one by one, the fees seem small. Added up and per academic year, less so. This is the weight of each combination on a leisure budget of €50 a month.

CombinationPer monthShare of €50
Prime Student€2.495%
Prime Student and Kindle Unlimited€12.4825%
All four€35.4671%

It is our own calculation with an example budget. Swap the €50 for your own: if subscriptions take more than a quarter, it is time to choose.

What Prime Student includes that you will use

  • Fast delivery at no extra cost, which is what you notice most in a shared flat.
  • Prime Video, so you do not pay for another platform.
  • Amazon Music Prime, for studying with music.
  • The reading included with Prime.
  • Reserved deals, such as Prime Day.

Before adding anything paid, use what you already have for a month. Many people find that the included music and reading are more than enough.

The order of trials for a student

  1. Prime Student in October: 90 days.
  2. Kindle Unlimited in February, after exams.
  3. Audible in March, if you have journeys.
  4. Music Unlimited only if the included music falls short.

One at a time, and with a reminder on day 23 of each trial month. The full method is in how to chain the free trials.

If your degree lasts more than four years

The Prime Student price lasts a maximum of four years. After that, the membership moves to the standard Prime rate: €49.90 a year. Note the date when the four years are up and decide then. If by then you are still aged 18 to 24 or still studying, the offer page shows what options your account has.

An example: the first academic year, month by month

This is how the first year looks for someone who starts Prime Student in October and cancels it in June.

MonthsWhat happensWhat they pay
October to December90-day free trial€0.00
January to JuneSix monthly Prime Student fees€14.94
July to SeptemberSubscription cancelled€0.00
Total for the year€14.94

In the second academic year there is no trial: nine monthly fees, €22.41. Together, the first two academic years cost €37.35. On the annual plan from day one they would have been €49.90.

The difference is small in euros. The reason for doing it this way is another: every June it makes you decide whether you still need it.

Three rules to avoid overpaying

  1. Pay only for term-time months: monthly payment lets you stop in summer.
  2. Try before you pay, and one at a time.
  3. Review in June and in September what you have really used.

With these three rules, subscriptions stop being a trickle nobody controls and become a decision you take twice a year, with the figures in front of you.

In short

  1. Nine months of Prime Student paid monthly: €22.41.
  2. The annual plan only wins if you use it eleven months or more.
  3. The first academic year, with the trial, costs €14.94.
  4. Kindle Unlimited and Audible: €89.91 each per academic year.
  5. Cancel in June and reactivate in September.
