How to read an Amazon.es product page before you buy

By · Published on · Updated on · 8 min read

In short

Before buying, look at four things on the page: who sells and who ships, the delivery date for your address, the return period and the price per unit. They are the facts that distinguish two offers that look the same. Then check that you have chosen the right variant and read the three-star reviews.

Why it pays to read the page

Most purchases that go wrong are not down to the product but to a fact on the page that was in plain sight and nobody read: a measurement, a seller, a date. Reading the page takes two minutes and avoids returns, waits and disappointments. You do not need to read everything: it is enough to know where to look.

The title and the variant

Start by checking that you are looking at the product you think you are. Many pages group several versions: colours, sizes, capacities, packs. The title and the price change as you select each one. It is easy to arrive from a link at the version in one colour and buy another without noticing. Before going further, confirm that the variant selected is the one you want.

Who sells and who ships

On Amazon.es there are products sold by Amazon and products sold by other businesses. Among the latter, some are shipped by Amazon from its warehouses and others by the seller itself. The page says which beside the buy button.

CaseWho sellsWho shipsWhat it means
1AmazonAmazonShort times and returns handled by Amazon
2Another businessAmazonShort times; the sale is the seller's
3Another businessThat businessTime, charges and returns are set by the seller

Why it matters

On it depend the delivery time, who handles a return and whom you complain to if something fails. No case is better than another in absolute terms: there are excellent third-party sellers. But it is worth knowing who you are dealing with before paying, above all for expensive purchases.

If the seller is a third-party business

Click on its name to see its profile: ratings from other buyers, how long it has been selling and contact details. A seller with many recent, positive ratings is a good sign. A newcomer with a price far below the rest calls for caution. Purchases from third-party sellers are covered by a guarantee from the platform itself, whose terms are in the help pages.

The delivery date

It is calculated for whichever address you have selected. Change it if you are going to receive the order somewhere else. If there are several offers for the same product, compare the date as well as the price: a few euros less can mean two more weeks of waiting. The delivery options are explained in fast delivery on Amazon.es.

Delivery charges

The price you see is not always the total. On products shipped by third-party sellers, or on orders that do not reach the minimum amount without Prime, delivery charges may be added. The page shows them beside the price. Always compare the total, not the price of the product.

The return period

Each page says until when you can return the product and on what conditions. Read it before buying something that may not suit, such as clothes, shoes or an appliance that has to fit a particular gap. During events such as Christmas the period may differ from the usual one. Some products, for hygiene reasons or because they are personalised, have their own conditions.

The guarantee

Besides returns, new products bought from a professional seller carry the legal guarantee laid down by consumer law, which in Spain is three years. It covers manufacturing defects, not wear or misuse. Keep the invoice, which you can download from the order. For any question about your rights, consult official consumer information.

The price per unit

On packs and large formats, the page usually shows the price per unit, per litre or per kilo. It is the fact that allows a real comparison. If it does not appear, do the division. The large format is not always the cheapest, and two packs that look the same can contain different quantities.

The crossed-out price

Many pages show a crossed-out previous price and a discount percentage. Take it as an indication, not as proof. What counts is whether the current price is good for that product, and you only know that if you have tracked it or compare it with other shops. A big discount on an inflated starting price is not a deal.

Other offers for the same product

The same product may have several sellers. The page shows a featured offer and a link to the others. It is worth opening for important purchases: sometimes the same item is available with a better delivery date, or a better price, from another seller. Compare total price, time and return conditions.

New or second-hand

Among those offers there may be units from Amazon Segunda Mano, the second-hand section of Amazon.es: returned or open-box products, checked and sold at a discount. Each one describes its condition. It is a good option for electronics, small appliances and books, provided you read the description of the condition and check the return period.

Measurements and specifications

It is the most avoidable cause of returns. Find the exact measurements on the page and compare them with the place where the product is going, tape measure in hand. In photos everything looks bigger or smaller than it is. For clothes and shoes, use the size guide on the page, not your usual size.

Compatibility

For accessories, spare parts and electronics, check that the product is compatible with what you already have: the exact model of your phone, your computer's connection, your coffee machine's type of capsule. The page usually lists compatible models. If yours does not appear, do not assume it will work.

How to read the reviews

  • Start with the three-star ones: they tend to explain strengths and weaknesses.
  • Look at the dates. A product may have changed since the first reviews.
  • Look for reviews from people who use it for the same thing as you.
  • Be wary of very short, enthusiastic ones posted on the same day.
  • Look at other buyers' photos: they show the real size.

The average rating

A high score with few reviews says little. A slightly lower one with thousands says a lot. Look too at how they are spread: a product with many five-star reviews and many one-star ones usually has a specific problem, such as faulty units or sizes that run wrong. The one-star reviews tell you which.

Other buyers' questions

Many pages include questions answered by the seller or by other customers. Before buying something with a specific doubt, look for it there: someone has probably asked already. It is quicker than waiting to receive the product to find out.

Labels and sponsored results

In search results, some products appear marked as sponsored: they are adverts, not recommendations. Other labels, such as those flagging best sellers, tell you about popularity, not that the product is the best for you. Use them as a starting point and decide with the four facts on the page.

Coupons and Subscribe & Save

Some pages show a coupon that has to be activated by ticking a box before adding the product to the basket: if you do not tick it, it is not applied. On consumables the option of a regular delivery at a discount may appear. It makes sense only for what you buy anyway, and you can cancel or skip a delivery.

Variants, once more

Colour, size and capacity change the price and, sometimes, the seller. After choosing the variant, go over the four facts again. It is the step that avoids most mistakes: the blue version may be sold by Amazon with delivery tomorrow and the red by a third party with delivery in ten days.

Before pressing the buy button

  • Is it the right variant in colour, size or capacity?
  • Who sells and who ships?
  • Does it arrive when you need it, at the address you have chosen?
  • Until when can it be returned?
  • Have you compared the price per unit with another format?

After buying

Keep the confirmation email and, when the product arrives, test it soon. The return period starts counting from delivery. The invoice is downloaded from the order, in your account. If something goes wrong, it is handled from there: Global Store Afiliados has no access to your orders.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the variant that was selected by default.
  • Not looking at who sells on an expensive purchase.
  • Trusting the photo for size.
  • Reading only the five-star reviews.
  • Not activating the coupon before adding to the basket.

In short

Seller, delivery, returns and price per unit. With those four facts and the variant well chosen, the purchase nearly always goes well. You have more habits of this kind in how to shop on Amazon.es and save.
