What to put on a wedding registry if you already live together: 40 ideas by room
In short
If your home is already set up, use the registry to improve what you have instead of duplicating it. Replace what is worn out, upgrade what you use every day, ask for things you would never buy yourselves and add items for travel and for your hobbies. The test for deciding is how often you would use it: anything used weekly goes in; anything used once a year, only if you would really love it.

The problem with the traditional registry
The wedding registry was invented to equip a home that did not exist. Dinner service, cutlery, sheets, cookware: everything a couple needed to get started. Today most couples reach the wedding after years of living together, with all of that already in the cupboards. Copying the traditional registry produces duplicates that end up stored away or returned.
That does not mean the registry has stopped making sense. It means its purpose changes. It stops being a list of first purchases and becomes a chance to replace, upgrade and treat yourselves to something you would otherwise put off indefinitely.
First step: a walk through the house
Before looking at any shop, walk through the house room by room with your phone and note three things: what is old or broken, what is mismatched and what you use every day even though you do not like it. More comes up than you expect: rough towels, sheets that no longer fit, pans that stick, a dinner service with missing plates, a suitcase with a broken zip.
That note is the foundation of the registry. These are useful, mid-priced gifts, and nobody gets them wrong because they replace something you already know you use.
Bedroom and bathroom: where it shows most
- Two sets of good-quality sheets in the exact size of your bed.
- A new duvet and its cover.
- Pillows: they lose their shape over the years and almost nobody replaces them in time.
- A complete matching towel set, with hand towels and bath towels.
- Bathrobes.
- Bedside lamps that give enough light to read by.
- A bedspread or throw for the foot of the bed.
Bed and bath linen is the category that works best on these registries. It is used every day, it wears out without you noticing and it comes at prices for every budget.
Kitchen and table: moving up a level
There are things you bought cheaply when you first moved out and that are still there. The wedding is the moment to swap them for ones that will last twenty years. A good chef's knife and a solid chopping board change your routine more than any appliance.
A cookware set with a thick base, a pan that does not stick or a better coffee maker are purchases people put off and that a guest is happy to make.
- Quality knives and a sharpener.
- A complete cookware set to replace the odd saucepans.
- Matching wine glasses and tumblers, enough of them to have people over.
- A dinner service you really like, if the current one is incomplete.
- Table linen and cloth napkins for meals with guests.
- Serving dishes and trays.
- A food processor or a pressure cooker, if you cook often.
Living room and storage
- New blankets and cushions, which change the sofa without changing the sofa.
- A floor lamp for the reading corner.
- Frames for the wedding photos, which otherwise never get printed.
- A speaker for music at home.
- Boxes and organisers for the wardrobe or the storage room.
- A better vacuum cleaner than the one you have.
Beyond the house: travel and outdoors
This is where a registry for couples who already live together really sets itself apart. If you travel, sturdy cabin suitcases and a large suitcase that lasts are gifts you use for years and that remind you of the giver every time you set off.
If you have a terrace or balcony, outdoor furniture, a barbecue or a cool box fall into the band of big gifts that groups look for.
- Cabin suitcases and a large suitcase.
- Travel or hiking backpacks.
- Washbags and luggage organisers.
- Patio furniture, a parasol or a barbecue.
- A cool box and picnicware.
Shared hobbies
Think about what you do together at weekends. Hiking gear, rackets, a mat and weights for training at home, board games, a camera, baking equipment. These are personal gifts without being risky, because you chose them yourselves. And they give close friends the chance to give something that says something about you rather than about the house.
A test for deciding
When you are unsure whether an object deserves a place on the registry, ask how often you would use it. Things used every week, such as a good frying pan, sheets or a cabin suitcase if you travel often, go in without debate. Things used once a year, such as a fondue set or a party dinner service, should only go in if you would really love them. This filter leaves a shorter registry with far less risk of forgotten gifts.
| Frequency of use | Examples | Does it go on the registry? |
|---|---|---|
| Daily or weekly | Sheets, pans, towels, coffee maker | Yes, always |
| Monthly | Suitcases, serving dishes for guests, barbecue | Yes, if you have the space |
| Yearly | Fondue set, party dinner service, ice-cream maker | Only if you would really love it |
| Never so far | Gadgets you have never missed | No |
What to leave out
Avoid very personal decoration, such as pictures or ornaments: taste is hard to get right and guests know it. Also avoid anything that depends on a size. And do not add things as filler. A short, honest registry is better than a long one full of objects that will end up in a cupboard. If you do not reach the number the rule gives, it does not matter.
How many gifts and at what price
The rule does not change because you live together: one gift per invitation, with half under €50. What changes is that reaching the number is harder. If your home is complete and the registry stops at thirty gifts for sixty invitations, leave it there and also offer the option of giving money, without favouring either.
We explain it in wedding registry or cash and the full sums are in how many gifts to list.
The case for quality
There is a deeper reason to ask for few things and good ones. A wedding gift is remembered for years: every time you use that pan or open that suitcase, you think of whoever gave it to you. That only happens with objects that last.
Ten quality gifts you will use for two decades are worth more, to you and to the giver, than thirty that break in three years. Do not hesitate to choose the good version of each thing: that is what group gifts are for.
An example registry for 40 invitations
For a wedding of 80 guests, a couple who have lived together for five years could build their registry like this. In the band up to €50, twenty gifts: two towel sets, sheets, pillows, glasses, a chef's knife, a chopping board, blankets, cushions, photo frames and organisers.
In the middle band, fourteen: a cookware set, a duvet, a coffee maker, two cabin suitcases, lamps, backpacks and a cool box. And in the top band, six: a vacuum cleaner, a food processor, a large suitcase, a patio table and chairs, a barbecue and a complete dinner service. No gift duplicates something that works, and all of them will be used.
Replace in sets, not in pieces
One detail improves the result a great deal: ask for complete sets instead of single pieces. If you are replacing towels, make it the whole set for the bathroom, and retire the old ones. If you are changing glasses, ask for twelve the same. Homes put together over the years accumulate mismatched objects, and the wedding is one of the few occasions when you can unify them.
When the gift arrives, get rid of what it replaces: donate it or take it to a recycling point. If you keep it “just in case”, you will have gained neither space nor order.
Gift cards on the registry
If your home is so complete that you cannot think what to ask for, a gift card on the registry is a halfway house between an object and money. It lets the guest give through the registry, in whatever amount they choose, and lets you decide later.
Use it sparingly: two or three amount options are enough. A registry made only of gift cards loses the charm of choosing a present, and the bank details already cover that.
How to explain the change to guests
Some relatives expect a classic registry and are surprised to see suitcases instead of cutlery. One sentence on the wedding website or in the message with the link is enough: “As our home is already set up, we have chosen things we need to replace and others to enjoy together.” Nobody objects to such a reasonable explanation, and it stops someone giving you, off their own bat, the dinner service you do not need.
Doing it on Amazon.es
The Amazon.es wedding registry accepts products from any category, which suits this kind of registry: the same link holds the sheets, the suitcase and the hiking gear. Creating it is free, you can keep it private while you prepare it and you share it with a link. The wedding registry guide has a room-by-room sheet for ticking what you are missing before you start.
Frequently asked questions about the registry when you already live together
Does a wedding registry make sense if we already live together?
Yes. It is a way to replace what is worn out and to ask for better-quality things you would not buy yourselves.
What do couples who already have a home ask for?
New bed linen and towels, better cookware, suitcases, outdoor furniture and things for their hobbies.
How do we decide whether a gift deserves a place on the registry?
By frequency of use. Anything used every week goes in; anything used once a year, only if you would really love it.
What if we do not reach the recommended number of gifts?
Keep the registry shorter and also offer the option of giving money, without favouring either.
Can we ask for travel items on a wedding registry?
Yes. Suitcases, backpacks and travel gear are among the most useful gifts for couples whose home is already equipped.
What is a wedding registry for when the home is already set up?
For replacing what is worn, upgrading what you use daily and asking for what you would never buy yourselves, instead of duplicating what you have.
How do we start a wedding registry if we already live together?
By walking through your home room by room and noting what is old or broken, what is mismatched and what you use daily even though you dislike it.
What should we ask for the bedroom and bathroom?
Good-quality sheets, a duvet, pillows, a full matching towel set, bathrobes and bedside lamps. It is the category that works best.
What should we ask for the kitchen if we already have kitchenware?
Better versions of what you use: quality knives, a heavy-based set of pans, matching glasses, a complete dinner service or a better coffee maker.
Can we put garden furniture or a barbecue on a wedding registry?
Yes. They are big gifts that fit what groups of friends or colleagues look for.
Can we include gifts for hobbies on a wedding registry?
Yes. Hiking gear, board games, a camera or baking equipment are personal gifts with no risk, because you chose them.
Which gifts are best left off a wedding registry?
Very personal decoration, anything that depends on a size and anything added just to fill space.
How many gifts should we list if we already live together?
The rule is the same: one per invitation, with half under €50. If you fall short, keep the list shorter and offer the option of cash as well.
Is it better to ask for a few good gifts or many cheap ones?
A few good ones. Ten quality gifts you will use for two decades are worth more than thirty that wear out in three years.
Should we ask for complete sets or single pieces?
Complete sets: the whole towel set or twelve identical glasses. It is the occasion to unify what is mismatched.
What should we do with old items when the replacement arrives?
Get rid of them: donate them or take them to a recycling centre. If you keep them "just in case", you gain neither space nor order.
Can we put gift cards on a wedding registry?
Yes, in moderation. Two or three amounts are enough as a middle way between an object and cash.
How do we explain a non-traditional registry to guests?
With one line: "As our home is already set up, we have chosen things we need to replace and others to enjoy together".
What would a registry for 40 invitations look like for a couple who live together?
About 20 gifts up to €50 (towels, sheets, glasses, blankets), 14 mid-priced (set of pans, cabin suitcases, lamps) and 6 big ones (vacuum cleaner, food processor, garden furniture).
Does the Amazon.es Wedding Registry accept products that are not for the home?
Yes. It accepts products from any category, so sheets, a suitcase and hiking gear all fit under the same link.
