How to thank people for wedding gifts: timing, method and 8 example messages
In short
Thank each person with a personal message during the month after the wedding. The message works if it has three parts: the thanks, the name of the gift and a line about how you will use it or a memory of the day. At five messages a day, split between the two of you, it is finished in two weeks.

Why it matters more than it seems
Whoever gives a wedding gift spends time and money, and often never hears another word. They do not know whether the parcel arrived, whether you liked it or whether it ended up in a cupboard. A two-line message settles that doubt, and it is what people remember about your wedding once they have forgotten the menu. It is not a formality: it is the part of the wedding that depends only on you.
When to send them
The first month is ideal. After that it is still better to thank late than not at all, but it gets harder: details fade and the backlog weighs on you. If you leave on your honeymoon straight after the wedding, start when you return and set yourselves a specific deadline, for example four weeks after you get back.
There is an earlier step worth not skipping. When a gift arrives before the wedding, confirm receipt the same day with a brief message. The full thank-you can wait, but someone who sent something three weeks ago should not be left wondering.
The three parts of the message
- The thanks, addressed to the person by name.
- The specific gift, named plainly: the lamp, the suitcase, the dinner service.
- A line that makes it personal: how you are already using it, where it is, or a memory of that person at the wedding.
The third part is what separates a sincere message from a template. It does not need to be clever. “We already used it on Sunday” is enough.
Examples for registry gifts
Thank you so much for the dinner service. We used it for the first time on Sunday with my parents and it looked lovely on the table. It meant a lot to see you dancing right to the end.
A thousand thanks for the suitcases. They are coming with us to Lisbon next month, so we will send you a photo from there. It was a treat to see you both looking so well at the wedding.
Thank you for the towels, which are already in the bathroom and are the softest we have ever had. We were so glad you could come from so far away.
Examples for cash gifts
With money, the rule is not to mention the amount but to mention where it is going. Anyone who gives an envelope likes to know what it has turned into.
Thank you from the heart for your gift. We are putting it towards the trip we have been postponing for years. It was a joy to have you with us that day.
Thank you so much for your generosity. It is going straight into the new kitchen, so we owe you the next dinner at ours. We loved sharing the day with you.
Examples for special cases
For a group gift, write to each person in the group, not just to whoever organised the collection. For someone who could not attend, say they were missed. For a gift that was not on the registry, thank them just the same.
Thank you for being part of the office gift. The food processor has already made three soups and a sponge cake. It meant a lot that you all clubbed together.
We missed you at the wedding, but your gift arrived right on time and we love it. The blanket has been on the sofa since day one. We owe you a dinner to tell you all about it.
What a lovely thought the picture was. We were not expecting it and it already has a place in the hallway. Thank you for thinking of us in such a personal way.
How not to forget anyone
- Download the thank-you list from your wedding registry, which shows the gifts received.
- Add by hand the cash gifts and anything that arrived another way.
- Split the list between you: each writes to their own family and friends.
- Set a target of five messages a day. In two weeks it is done.
- Cross off each name when you send the message, not when you write it.
The last point looks minor and is not. Most oversights come from messages that stayed in drafts.
Card, message or call
| Person | Format that works best |
|---|---|
| Grandparents and older relatives | A phone call or a handwritten card |
| Parents, siblings and witnesses | In person, with a small gesture |
| Close friends | A personal message with a wedding photo |
| Work colleagues | A short individual message |
| Courtesy guests | A correct, prompt message |
What never works is a collective message in a group chat. Thanking forty people at once is thanking none of them.
Add a photo
If you already have a photo from the photographer or from guests, attach one that shows the person you are writing to. It turns a correct message into one that gets kept. You do not need to wait for the full album: a phone photo will do. And if the gift is an object, a photo of it in place at home is even better.
If a long time has passed
It is never too late to say thank you, even after six months. No long explanation is needed: one sentence acknowledging the delay and moving straight to the thanks is enough. For example: “We are late, but we did not want to miss thanking you for the lamp, which has been in the living room since day one.” What bothers people is not the delay but the silence.
Organise it on a sheet
A simple spreadsheet prevents nearly every oversight. Six columns are enough: name of the person or family, gift, how it arrived, which of you is writing, format of the thank-you and date sent. Fill in the first three as the gifts arrive, without waiting for the wedding.
The fourth and fifth are decided in ten minutes one evening. The sixth is the one that tells you at a glance how much is left. Sort the sheet by the date the gift arrived and start with the oldest: they have been waiting longest.
If you write cards by hand
A handwritten card has a value no message can match, especially for older people. It does not need to be long. Four lines with the same structure as always: thanks, the gift and a personal line. Both of you sign. Buy them before the wedding and have the envelopes addressed: after the honeymoon, what slows you down is not writing the card but looking up the postcode. If you have a wedding photo printed in a small format, slip one into each envelope.
Thanking people for what is not a gift
There are people who appear on no list and who made the day possible: whoever lent you their home to get dressed, whoever drove the grandparents, the friend who sewed on a button at eight in the morning, the witnesses, whoever read at the ceremony.
Note them down the week of the wedding, because they are the first to be forgotten, and write to them with the same care. For them the thank-you does not mention an object but what they did and what it meant to you.
Duplicate gifts or ones that do not fit
If a gift is a duplicate or is no use to you, the thank-you is the same. The problem is not mentioned. If you want to exchange it and it came with a gift receipt, do so without comment; if the person asks later, tell the truth naturally: “we had two and swapped one for the glasses.” With a well-made registry these cases are rare, because guests can see what has already been bought.
Guests who speak another language
If part of the family or some friends do not speak your language, write to them in theirs even if you are not fluent. Three correct, sincere sentences are worth more than a perfect paragraph in a language they do not understand. Ask someone to check it if you are unsure. It is a small gesture people remember, especially those who travelled a long way to be with you.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying the same text for everyone and changing only the name.
- Mentioning the amount of a cash gift.
- Thanking only the person who organised a group gift.
- Waiting for the photo album before starting.
- Forgetting those who gave and could not attend, who are the ones most unsure whether the parcel arrived.
Where the thank-you list comes in
If you created the registry on Amazon.es, you have a downloadable thank-you list that records the gifts received. It is the most reliable starting point, because it does not depend on your memory or on notes scribbled in the week of the wedding. Complete it with the cash gifts and those that arrived outside the registry, and work from a single document. If you are still planning the wedding, the wedding registry guide explains how to create it.
Frequently asked questions about wedding thank-yous
How long do you have to thank people for wedding gifts?
Ideally within the month after the wedding. If the deadline passes, it is still better to thank late than not at all.
Should cash gifts be thanked too?
Yes. It is good to say what it will be used for, without mentioning the amount.
What goes in a wedding thank-you message?
The thanks, the name of the gift and a personal line about how you are using it or a memory of the day.
Is it acceptable to thank people by WhatsApp?
Yes, for friends and colleagues, as long as the message is individual. Older relatives prefer a call or a card.
How do you thank people for a group gift?
By writing to each person in the group separately, not just to whoever organised the collection.
What structure should a wedding thank-you message have?
Three parts: the thanks addressed to the person by name, the specific gift, and a personal line about how you use it or a memory of the day.
How many thank-you messages should we write per day?
Five a day, shared between the two of you. At that pace you finish in about two weeks.
Should we mention the amount when thanking for a cash gift?
No. Mention what the money will go towards, such as the trip or a renovation, but never the amount.
How do we thank someone who gave a gift but could not attend?
With a message confirming that the gift arrived, saying they were missed and telling them how you are using it.
How do we thank someone for a gift that was not on the registry?
Just like the others: naming the gift and thanking them for thinking of you in such a personal way.
Does a thank-you message in a group chat work?
No. A collective message does not work: thanking forty people at once is thanking nobody.
Is it worth attaching a photo to the thank-you?
Yes. A wedding photo with the person in it, or one of the gift already in place at home, turns a correct message into one people keep.
What if months have passed without thanking people?
Thank them anyway, with one line acknowledging the delay and moving straight on to the gift. What hurts is silence, not lateness.
How do we organise thank-yous so nobody is forgotten?
With a six-column sheet: person, gift, how it arrived, who writes, format and date sent. Start with the gifts that arrived first.
When is a handwritten card better?
For grandparents and older relatives. Four lines signed by both of you are enough; buy the cards and address the envelopes before the wedding.
Who else should we thank besides people who gave gifts?
Those who helped on the day: witnesses, whoever read at the ceremony, whoever drove the grandparents or lent their home. Note them down that same week.
What do we say if a gift is a duplicate or does not suit us?
Nothing. The thank-you is the same and the problem is not mentioned. If it came with a gift receipt, you can exchange it quietly.
In which language should we thank guests who do not speak ours?
In theirs. Three correct, sincere sentences in their language are worth more than a perfect paragraph they cannot read.
Should we acknowledge gifts that arrive before the wedding?
Yes, the same day and with a short message. The full thank-you can wait until after the celebration.
What is the Amazon.es thank-you list?
A downloadable record of the gifts received through the Wedding Registry. You complete it by hand with cash gifts and anything that arrived another way.
