Why download

Because on a trip the connection fails just when you need it most: in the tunnel, on the plane, on the mountain road. And because streaming with weak coverage uses data and battery at the same time. With the music downloaded you depend on nothing. It sounds the same at ten thousand metres as in your living room.

What you need

Downloads are a feature of full music subscriptions, such as Amazon Music Unlimited. Free services with adverts do not usually allow them. Besides the subscription, you need free space on your phone and a wifi connection to do the downloading. Nothing more.

Before you leave

  • Download over wifi with the phone plugged in: it is what uses most battery and data.
  • Check the free space. A long playlist can take up several gigabytes depending on the quality.
  • If you are short of space, lower the download quality in the app's settings.
  • Open the app in flight mode to check that everything plays.

Quality and space

The higher the quality, the more each song takes up. For listening with ordinary headphones on a train or plane, where there is background noise, standard quality is more than enough and takes far less room. Keep high quality for home. If your phone takes a memory card, some apps let you store downloads there.

How much music to take

Work out the hours of travel, there and back, and multiply them by 1.5. For a trip of six hours in total, nine hours of music. That leaves room to skip songs without running out of playlist. Add the waiting time: airports, stations and connections add up to more than you expect.

What to download

Take variety: something calm for sleeping, something lively for driving and a podcast or audiobook in case you tire of music. A common mistake is to download only the usual playlist and be bored by the second hour. Add a couple of whole albums you have been meaning to hear properly: a trip is the best moment.

The flight-mode check

It is the step almost nobody takes and the one that avoids the surprise. The night before, put your phone in flight mode, open the app and play one song from each downloaded playlist. If any does not play, it did not download fully. Reconnect the wifi, wait for it to finish and repeat the test.

During the trip

Switch on the app's offline mode. It stops the app trying to play online and using data when coverage is weak, which is when the phone uses most battery. With the mode on you will only see what you have downloaded, which also saves you searching.

On the plane

Flight mode with bluetooth switched on is enough for wireless headphones. Take a wired pair too in case the others run out of battery. Download everything before you reach the airport: terminal wifi is slow and unstable, and it is unwise to rely on it for a large download.

On trains and the underground

Coverage comes and goes with the tunnels, and each reconnection uses battery. With playlists downloaded and offline mode on, the phone stops searching. For daily journeys, download the whole week's music at home once a week and forget about it.

In the car

Prepare the playlist before setting off and do not touch your phone on the move. If the car has voice control or steering-wheel buttons, use them. A long, well-ordered playlist avoids having to choose songs while you drive. On back roads and mountain roads coverage disappears for miles: without downloads, the music cuts out right there.

Abroad

Outside your country, data may cost more or be limited, depending on your plan and the destination. With the music downloaded you do not depend on that. Check the terms with your operator before leaving and switch off mobile data for the music app just in case. The available catalogue can also vary from one country to another, one more reason to carry everything downloaded.

Coaches and trains with wifi

Many forms of transport advertise wifi on board. It is good for messages and little else. It is usually slow, shared among all the passengers and cuts out in every tunnel. Do not count on it for streaming, much less for downloading. Treat it as an extra and have your music ready just as if it did not exist.

If you run out of space mid-trip

It happens when the trip's photos and videos fill the phone. Before deleting memories, delete downloads: start with the playlists you have already heard, which you can get back when you return. Another option is to lower the download quality and download the playlists again when you have wifi, which can free more than half the space they took up.

Group trips

In a car with four people, the music belongs to everyone. Prepare a shared playlist beforehand to which each person adds ten songs, and download it. It avoids the argument about who chooses and means nobody spends the trip with headphones on. If you are taking a portable speaker for the destination, charge it the night before along with everything else.

Battery

  • Flight mode whenever you do not need coverage.
  • Low screen brightness: music does not need the screen.
  • Wired headphones if the phone's battery is tight.
  • A small power bank in your backpack.
  • Close the apps you are not using.

Listening to downloaded music in flight mode uses very little. What drains the battery on a trip is the screen and the constant search for coverage.

Headphones

Charge the wireless ones the night before and take the charging cable. If you are going to fly, headphones that block out noise let you listen at lower volume and rest more. For sleeping, wired ones are more comfortable and do not get lost in the seat.

With children

Download their songs and stories to a separate playlist and take headphones in their size, with volume limiting if possible. In the car, alternating one playlist of theirs and one of yours avoids arguments. An audiobook for the whole family makes long journeys shorter.

Podcasts and audiobooks

Music tires sooner than speech. For trips of more than three hours, take at least one long podcast or an audiobook. They take up little space and entertain in a different way. If you have never tried audiobooks, a trip is a good moment: we explain how in getting started with audiobooks.

Downloads are not for ever

Downloaded songs remain tied to your subscription. If you cancel it, they stop being available. And the app needs to connect from time to time to confirm that the subscription is still active. On a normal trip you will not notice, but if you are going to be offline for several weeks, open the app on wifi before leaving.

When you get back

Delete the downloads you are not going to use. The playlists stay in your account and you can download them again whenever you like. Freeing that space stops the phone running out of room for photos right on the next trip.

With a free trial

If you have a long trip coming up and have never had a full subscription, starting the 30-day Amazon Music Unlimited trial the week before lets you see whether downloads are useful to you. Note the last free day: if the trip lasts longer than the trial, the subscription will renew by itself in the middle of your holiday. The free trial calculator gives you the date.

The night-before check

  • Playlists downloaded and tested in flight mode.
  • Phone charged to one hundred per cent and a power bank in your backpack.
  • Headphones charged and a spare cable.
  • Mobile data switched off for the music app.
  • An audiobook or podcast downloaded in case you tire of music.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on airport or hotel wifi to download.
  • Not testing the downloads in flight mode.
  • Downloading at maximum quality and running out of space.
  • Taking only the usual playlist.
  • Leaving the app's data switched on abroad.

In short

Download at home, test in flight mode and travel in offline mode. Three steps and the music does not fail. If you do not yet have a service with downloads, the Amazon Music Unlimited guide explains what it offers, and in who it suits we help you decide.
